When I requested a replacement license online from the DMV last year, I received a temporary license that I could print out and carry with me. Did you not get one of those?

I just realized there was temporary license in receipt they sent me. Thank you!

The bar is that you are a validly licensed driver. They could ticket you for not having it, but the picture might smooth that for you. There's no rational reason you would be arrested, towed as long as you actually are a licensed driver.

It takes dmv 20 days to ship a replacement license, how is someone supposed to not drive for 20 days? I can’t miss a month of work bc my license was stolen

RededHaid t1_jd5ow78 wrote

Did I say don’t drive? No. Disclosure. I’m not a lawyer.

DisasterPieceKDHD OP t1_jd5pe1c wrote

I know, the question wasn’t directed at you, I meant in general how could a cop ticket you for someone stealing your license

3

RededHaid t1_jd5pyvk wrote

Before Covid you would walk into the AAA motor club and walk out with a copy. I doubt the law anticipated the current issues.

3

Amazondspboss t1_jd66up3 wrote

If you drive without a license on your persons they will give you a ticket. If you drive and never had a license or permit more than likely the car will be towed. In this scenario there is only one person driving.

ZaggahZiggler t1_jd9uam0 wrote

They won’t. A photo of your license will suffice and the printout copy will do just fine. Cops are just going to run the numbers on it anyways to verify it’s valid.

Betorah t1_jd6bay1 wrote

When you apply online, you can print off a temporary license that is valid for a certain number of days. I had to do this at the end of August when I lost my driver’s license. My husband was very upset that I hadn’t gone to get one in person as we were going on vacation several days after it expired. The license arrived before the printed temporary one was invalidated.

DisasterPieceKDHD OP t1_jdff6kk wrote

My printer wont work because I didn’t pay the HP subscription, can I use a picture of the temporary license?

1

MountainRiverRock t1_jd5mz3g wrote

I can’t find anything on google stating it’s illegal. I would assume taking a picture of your license and presenting it to the officer would be enough, considering they can look you up in their system.

I would obviously explain the situation to them and hope they’re not in a bad mood that day.

DisasterPieceKDHD OP t1_jd5njbu wrote

I only asked here because i couldn’t find anything on google or Connecticut government website or dmv website, sorry if this is wrong place to ask this

1

MountainRiverRock t1_jd5nua4 wrote

I think this is the perfect place to ask, no worries. If I were you I wouldn’t worry about it.

5

DisasterPieceKDHD OP t1_jd5ofr2 wrote

Okay thank you. I’m just freaking out a little bc I know cops treat driving without a license seriously and when my wallet got stollen I didn’t even think about license thing I was just thinking about my money and debit cards in my wallet and now I’m worried I’m gonna go to jail for driving without a license

1

MountainRiverRock t1_jd5p48m wrote

How soon can you go to the DMV?

1

DisasterPieceKDHD OP t1_jd5p8us wrote

I already ordered the replacement license online on dmv website but its gonna take 20 business days they said to deliver it

BronzedAppleFritter t1_jd81ifs wrote

You're not understanding the difference between not being a licensed driver at all and being a licensed driver but not having a physical copy of your license with you.

1

pastafaz t1_jd6nb8d wrote

And they are hoping you are not in a mood too.

Observant_Neighbor t1_jd5uypk wrote

Not my first choice. I'd print it on paper. Why would you want to give your photo to a cop while it was unlocked? He or she could look through it and find something else to charge you with.

If you have the paper copy and you have the police report where you reported it stolen, so long as you are only stopped for a traffic violation, you should be fine.

3

rysimpcrz t1_jd5ohua wrote

If you're not committing traffic violations, no one would pull you over for having a copy of your license.

2

DisasterPieceKDHD OP t1_jd5oug1 wrote

I’ve never been pulled over before and I drive safe I’m just worried about if I ever got pulled over for any reason like if my break light or something went out before my replacement license came. I don’t have a license copy currently, it would just be a picture of my stolen license

1

rysimpcrz t1_jd5whh1 wrote

They can always run your name and see the situation.

1

GloomyMelons t1_jd7klrc wrote

No, I've been in this situation. Was pulled over and did not have my physical license on me. I did have a picture of my license. I received a warning but was told I need to carry my physical license with me. This was in Orange for reference.

NEVER GIVE THE POPO YOUR PHONE. Caps intended.

2

DisasterPieceKDHD OP t1_jdabaq3 wrote

Why? Will they look through your phone?

2

ConradsLaces t1_jdcxh3s wrote

Yes.

Just like handing your phone to anyone else... They can look thru it.

Probably a lot harder to get it back from them, if you suddenly decide you don't want them exploring everything.

So police will arrest me for driving without a license and tow my car??? I have the receipt from the DMV that my replacement is being shipped but the dmv said it would take 20 business days to ship

−1

[deleted] t1_jd5oqyx wrote

They could potentially just give you a written warning or a ticket for driving without having it. They wouldnt arrest you. Honestly dont get too paranoid about it. Depends on the officer and their mood especially if youre not a jackass about it. Im surprised theres nothing on DMVs website. Youre not gonna go to jail. You already have a license just not the physical card.

3

rysimpcrz t1_jd5on8h wrote

Are you doing something that requires an arrest?

1

DisasterPieceKDHD OP t1_jd5oyh6 wrote

I don’t think so, that’s why i asked if it’s ok to drive without physical license until my replacement comes

1

mkt853 t1_jd5rqpw wrote

You'll be fine. At worst you can give them your name, DOB and/or social and they look it up to verify you are a licensed driver in good standing.

crazywolf-29 t1_jd5uq65 wrote

U should be good. Few months back i got into an accident. I had left my wallet at home, i told the officer and showed the picture of my license. He quickly noted that id number and i was good. So ur id number is enough for the officer to pull up everything about ur license

1

Larrik t1_jd7gl1m wrote

Supposedly if you have the number you are good. Never tested the theory.

I got pulled over and didn’t even have my license on me and nothing happened lol he said “as long as you have one, I can look that up, and you’re good”

SonicBoom6 t1_jd7kfgo wrote

These days they pull the car identification up by scanning the plate. They don't have to pull you over first. They have plate and speed lidar sitting on the car. You know they are active when you see the IRdot flicker. So if you have a valid reason to be pullover and ticket the amount worth the court while they will do that.

1

RagingGiraffe73 t1_jd8lktq wrote

Maybe a ticket for not carrying ur identification or something like that. Depends on the cop prby more then anything honestly.

Somewhat related, I look forward to the day I can have an encrypted digital version on my phone that can just be transmitted when needed. I know a lot of you will hate that idea but I'm tired of carrying a wallet.

gerlach t1_jd9rr8y wrote

Also, if you aren't carrying your license in CT and you get a citation for it, you can generally show up at court and show them your license and the judge will waive the citation.

Carrying a valid drivers license when you are operating a motor vehicle is the law in CT, but if you are properly registered then the likely worst case is that you will be inconvenienced by a courtroom visit if that's your only offense.
