I still have at least 2 years on the plate reg and have full coverage insurance on the car.

I just sold it and not sure what to do as far as insurance and plates.

I plan on getting another car within a few weeks.

any ideas? If I drop the insurance, don't they report to CT DMV? Which means I need to cancel reg too?

thanks

you'll be transferring the reg and insurance from old to new vehicle.

Contact insurance company first once you get the new vehicle and get a new insurance card for the new vehicle. You'll need proof of insurance for transferring reg at DMV. Then contact DMV. Ask them what if any additional paper they require for transfer. I'm sure there is a form you'll need to complete and make an appointment to do the DMV transaction. I think that's it. Someone else may need to chime in if I missed anything. Did you keep your plates?

Yes I still have the plates. Just sold yesterday. I haven't canceled reg or cancelled insurance. Since I have over 2 years reg left on reg, I didn't think it made sense to cancel.

yeah, if you have over 2 years on the reg, I wouldn't have cancelled either. You could've cancelled and if I recall correctly DMV would issue a partial refund. They used to do that but it may be different today. 15 years ago I bought a used car. Had it about 2 months and someone hit and destroyed the thing totaling it. I canceled the reg on it and DMV issued me a partial refund.

Contact town tax department now to stop paying tax on the old car

Yeah that partial refund is a scam, I sent one in a year ago and never got it. Took months to get a reply but only for them to forward to some other department.

Happened to my and a friend

Do not cancel your car insurance, even if you don't have a car to insure. Insurance companies see a gap in coverage and your rates will skyrocket. I had to send proof that I was insured under my employer for the few years I drove my company car as my only car.

if you are buying again in 2 weeks, DO NOT CANCEL INSURANCE. While it is perfectly legal to cancel insurance, insurance companies search for any gap in coverage(yes, even when you don’t have a vehicle to insure) and raise rates considerably, I mean like double. Yes, even for a 1 week gap. They tried doing it to me, luckily I had my motorcycle still covered through another policy, so I was able to prove that there was never a period when I didn’t have insurance.
