Relocating?

My wife and I are thinking about relocating to the Northeast from where we currently live to be in an area that is more aligned with our political beliefs. We live in a deeply red state and don't care for it.

Any insight y'all can provide on any areas we should look at and the best things/challenges about living in CT would be appreciated.

Our house budget is about $900k and we'd love some land but in pretty close proximity to restaurants and a major airport.

Simsbury and Avon are about 25 minutes from Bradley if you're looking for a house in that range. Good school systems, resturants are plenty. Farmington is futher but has good highway access and has a hospital there.

Where’s the East of the river options? 🙂 also check out Glastonbury or South Windsor for that price range, or nearby smaller towns.

For what it’s worth, even the more conservative parts of CT can be good places to live. We moved into a small farm town where there’s plenty of conservative influence, but I still feel connected to the “blue” identity in small CT, and have been able to easily find other progressive friends in the area.

Glastonbury is a great town. IF they want to go to the shore, the Lymes, Old Saybrook, Westbrook are all nice too, and within distance to Tweed in NEw Haven.

While I love the convenience of Tweed, it's FAR from a major airport with just one airline and a very sporadic schedule at that

Even BDL is not a major airport, requires connections to many locations, and international flights are typically limited (currently, none to Europe, Asia, nor South America; only Toronto, Cancun, and Montego Bay).

If you're moving to Connecticut, might as well check out the SouthEastern shoreline towns such as East Lyme and Stonington, not far from the T F Green airport in Cranston, RI, and still within reach of our Hartford-Springfield airport.

That’s not true. $900k goes a long way in CT. They can get a great house. We are northeast of BDL and built a new 3000sq ft home on 2 acres in 2019 for $650k. $900k is a great way to enter and enjoy CT.

OP living within 25 mins of BDL is excellent. I go from my driveway through security in about 30 mins routinely. I’m a 17 mile drive away. It’s a great place to live.

Your budget is great. No need to worry about finding a house.

Fairfield County* Fairfield -Train to New York. Great schools. Plenty of restaurants and so on.

Trumbull-Less expensive than Fairfield. Restaurants, mall, and a movies. Great schools.

Shelton-Very low taxes. Good schools. Walmart, restaurants and farms.

New Haven County*

Milford-Train to New York, restaurants, movies, the mall, and beaches. Good schools.

*Hartford County

Hartford has an airport, but if you have kids you'll want to live in a surrounding town.

West Hartford-Fastrak bus stop to get to Hartford. Restaurants, and the Westfarms mall is close. I forget if it's in West Hartford or Farmington. A movies is over in Hartford and Plainville.

Newington-Fastrak stop to Hartford. Good schools. Safe neighborhood.

Bristol-Lake Compounce, FasTrak stop to get to Hartford, and ESPN. Good schools, but one high high school is deemed the better one.

Considering the median home price in one of Hartford 'toney' suburbs- West Hartford is 350K- you really could live in any town in greater Hartford you desire. Median home price in Hartford metro is 322K.

Avon, Farmington, West Hartford, Canton, Wethersfield, Glastonbury, South Windsor- all worth looking into. BDL (Bradley International Airport) is the regional airport- a medium hub Is close to all the places mentioned.

If you are seeking Blue, MA or VT. Avoid NH, and anything even slightly rural.

Any specific regions you need to more heavily because of work/office constraints. Do you need access to Hartford, or NYC, or Boston forcwork reasons??

Otherwise based off your limited criteria, I'd focus on West Hartford, Farmington valley, S Windsor and glastonbury.

We tend to be a blue state, but we're not preachy about politics or religion for the most part.

We both work remote but being close to Boston and NY for social/entertainment purposes (and a major airport for long distance and int'l flights) would be great.

Yes, it’s becoming more and more of a thing. In economics its called "voting with your feet". if you feel passionately about something, you will take steps to mitigate the issue.

And the same thing happens on the other end of the political spectrum. People moving from CA and PNW to red states such as TX for politics.

No it isn't. They can easily get a home in Fairfield, Trumbull, Shelton, Newington, West Hartford, Milford, or Bristol.
