My friend and I are going to Mohegan Sun and maybe Foxwoods on NYE. Neither of us know either casino well. I have a few questions:

  1. Any good restaurant recommendations (ideally affordable)?

  2. Any NYE events worth going too? Both casinos have multiple NYE events listed on their websites.

  3. Any good gaming tips for novices? Does either casino have electronic blackjack games like at MGM Springfield? Any other games worth it like bingo?

  4. Any tips as to parking, dealing with crowds, other?

You don't go to the Casino for "affordable" food. Treat yourself.

This. Everything is overpriced because… well… where else are you gonna go lol?

The events will be PACKED. That may be your thing. This means the tables will also be packed. If you’re going with a group of 3+ don’t think you’re going to easily get seats at the same table.

If the valet is open use it it’s free, if not the parking levels tend to fill up from bottom to top. If it’s raining/snowing don’t go to the roof parking as it’s open.

This is for Mohegan. Also remember, Mohegan is setup like giant figure 8 with the shops/hotel in the middle.

Mohegan Sun is newer and nicer.

The Irish pub at MS is good and so is Michael Jordan's steakhouse. They might be booked for dinner You gotta reserve EARLY

otherwise there's a chick FIL a and Bobby's Burger Palace

I didn't really like the Irish pub there, the shepherds pie was mediocre at best. That being staid michael jordan's steakhouse is good and the Michael jordans grill (if it's still there is cheaper and also very good).

"Affordable" when you're going to the casino on New Year's Eve lol

Prepare for way too many people, way overpriced everything, high table limits, etc.

They actually do a lot of $1-$10 table games on NYE for some reason

Go to Mohegan, skip Foxwoods. It’s nicer and more artistic. Foxwoods feels more like a grand hotel. There is a food court with affordable options, or plenty of affordable food options at Mohegan.

Never understood why foxwoods always gets shit on. I like it more tbh. It’s bigger, has a full outlet mall inside, easy to get around and figure out where you are, plenty to do. Shrine is always a good time if they aren’t sold out already

I'm calling bs. I feel like I always get lost at foxwoods. At least with Mohegan it's just circles.

Not gonna lie I always got lost in the circle. No matter how many times I’ve gone I always go the wrong direction. Luckily you get where you’re going eventually.

I've never gotten turned around at Mohegan, but I literally just got lost trying to get to a restaurant at Foxwoods yesterday with my kids.

And that damn outlet mall.... The hallways to nowhere.

I agree, years ago when I was single my friends and I would go to shrine at least once a month.

If you stay late enough you get to watch all the gambling addicts coming down the escalator at 4AM in their PJ’s and winter coats. Bonus depression points if you’re sobering up

Bobby’s burger palace is probably the best cheap option at Mohegan

$10 or so for a burger

Mohegan also has the better free NYE celebrations.

Mohegan all the way. Food, drinks, events, and the games are just better (and newer). They have electronic blackjack, roulette, and even craps. The hotel is much nicer. The only downside is they closed the poker room. Hope you have a great New Year’s weekend!

DaJbox47 t1_j2971tv wrote

They closed the old poker room and immediately opened a new one…. They still have a poker room

SoxPatsWhalersCelts t1_j2bwac7 wrote

Please tell me where so I can go tomorrow. It’s not in either of the two main casinos, and you know how you had to walk all the way to the back of the new casino to find the old poker room? That’s all boarded up. I’m sorry if I misled anyone. The last 3 times I’ve gone it’s been with family, and poker is not a “family” game. You need to be alone, for the simple reason that it’s a grind. You are going to be there for at least half the day with focus. I will take your word for it, however if you can point me in the right direction I’d be grateful. Thanks

DaJbox47 t1_j2c2wn5 wrote

It’s right across from the new Sportsbook, formerly the racebook. If you are walking around the circles and see Asian gaming or the Asian restaurant (Phantasia), head in that direction and you will see it. It’s not readily visible if you’re just making laps of the casino.

Biggest gambling tip I can give you 1. Bring ONLY what you can afford to lose, when it's gone, you are done gambling. 2. While gambling they will offer you free drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic. DO NOT take the free alcohol, they want to to get tipsy as you will gamble more..

I play craps, and if I get up I go play 5c video roulette at the bar and get free drinks

There are only two games worth playing in a casino. Blackjack If you know basic strategy cold. And craps if you bet the pass/No pass line. In everything else the odds are so stacked against you; you are guaranteed to lose.

duunnneee t1_j28156g wrote

Poker is actually the only correct answer, all other games have negative ev

You aren't wrong but, to be a good poker player requires a lot of study.

I only bet pass/no pass if the roller knows what they’re doing/stacks the rolls.

Otherwise I bet on 6 or 8 after the come out

Mohegan has a much more modern vibe overall.

Agree that the food at either place isn’t a good value.

Money_Whisperer t1_j278aje wrote

Best food you’re gonna get is Frank Pepe’s and Krispy Kreme at Mohegan. I recommend the pepperoni at Pepe’s.

Try to download the app/monitor when Krispy has the “hot light” on. That means they just made them. They taste ridiculously good fresh and hot, like, best donuts you’ve ever had good.

However, Foxwoods has better table minimums from my experience. I play real blackjack and always bring a chart with me to know the best possible move for every hand. Lowers house edge down to .4%, best odds you’re gonna get at the casino.

So I’d recommend going to mohegan first for lunch, then go to Foxwoods to gamble/drink (scorpion bar and sugar factory at Foxwoods are great) then go crash at a hotel near Foxwoods. I doubt any of the new years shit they’re doing at either place will be worth it but I’ve never tried. Just giving my standard advice for a good time.

I am interested in creating a chart for myself. Can you share some tips or provide a sample?

Google it. You don’t need to create one yourself.

Mohegan Sun is awesome for New Year's celebrations, but NYE is not the time to learn table games. Reservations are absolutely necessary for dinner. Also know, you'll probably be ass to elbow walking around. Maybe not with COVID? Yea, no, ass to elbow, lol.

Both casinos are alright, they might have some tickets events you can look at for new years. Might include food and drinks depending.

Way too late to book anything, and both places are going to be crowded and then some.

That said, Encore in Boston is always crowded but is a much nicer hotel and experience than MGM or anything CT can offer.
