In the process of going solar and received a UCC Statement Request Form from CT UCC Statement Services out of Manchester. I’ve never heard of this and struggle to see the benefit or even the point. Apparently their fee is $90 to send you a statement. I called to get more information but the woman just kept repeating that for $90 they sent me a statement outlining the loan and lien information. Online searches only mention small businesses and the fact that there are also UCC Statement scams.

If anyone could shed some light on this for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can go to the Secretary of State website and ask them if it is legitimate. I doubt it is.

So I’m assuming you financed your solar and the solar company put a lien on the panels they installed. Do you know if the UCC was filed already? You should be able to search that publicly.

It sounds scam-ish, especially if you financed your panels, because liens are typically public record

Sounds like one of the hundreds of weird mortgage scams I got after buying my house.

If everything is all signed and done, the solar company puts a lien on your house since you have their panels. Call your town clerk and give them your name and address and ask if they’ve recorded a ucc financing statement lately.

Land records are public, but an actual UCC financing statement that goes in the land records has VERY little information. It will have your name and address and the company you got your solar from, and honestly that’s about all.

Yeah this one was new to me. My info and the solar company’s info is really all that’s on the form. My first thought was that they just snagged it off the public record.

No, it's a legit company. But they provide a useless service. They make money by tricking people into thinking they need the service. They send official looking letters asking you to pay money.

What they are doing is scouring the UCC filings in Connecticut, which stands for Uniform Commercial Code, which includes all laws relative transactions such as equipment leases and related secured interests.

The solar lease company had to file UCC paperwork to affect a lien on your house for the duration of the lease. That's there to make sure they get their equipment back and get paid for the entire lease duration, such as if you sell the house or stop paying, they can foreclose the lien. This company is offering for $90 to summarize the paperwork that has already been filed with the state.

As a business owner, I get these letters all the time. Sometimes they basically want to provide me with a copy of paperwork that I filed myself.
