West Hartford are you ok?

There have been 15 pedestrian collisions in 2022 alone, 3 of which were fatal.

Something wilds going on here. I assume it’s people looking at their phones because almost every car I see on the roads has a driver doing it. I catch myself doing it. I hate it. I’m done though. Never again.

wydellasaurus t1_j1nx999 wrote

It’s also the road design. Build it for high speeds, and that’s what you’ll get.

My SO used to live there after college and we both cannot stand the ebb and flow of the town. It's a wildly dense cluster of neighborhoods with city traffic and lights at each corner. People try and bypass traffic by cutting through smaller neighborhoods and RIP through sidestreets. Honestly the town has gone to hell in the past 10 or so years. I avoid it at all costs now. Unfortunate, because it has alot to offer.

People also insist on walking in the road and not using sidewalks.

In the little town my mom lives in they built a side walk all the way through town for this one woman in a motorized wheel chair. She still drives in the road. Wild she hasn’t been hit yet.

I believe that’s the one — I heard the same story and that’s too specific to have happened in more than one place!

Of the three pedestrians killed in west Hartford this year, one was on a sidewalk, one was in a crosswalk, and the third was in the roadway at work directing a vehicle out of a driveway.

I like that. But unfortunately too many drivers don’t pay attention and you don’t want to be on the wrong end of a Buick while walking the dog.

TreeEleben t1_j1mye8z wrote

They claim that the concrete sidewalk is too hard, and that the asphalt roads are softer and better to walk on.

−3

charons-voyage t1_j1n20x3 wrote

As a runner, this is true. Asphalt is also smoother than many concrete sidewalks, less deviations/blips/etc. sidewalks are also frequently blocked by parked cars, trash bins, etc. I will run on the sidewalk if it’s on a busy road and it’s safe for me to be on the sidewalk, but I usually just run in the road.

Perma_frosting t1_j1nl7zq wrote

What makes West Hartford miserable to drive in for me is the combination of through-traffic with people pulling in and out of the roadside parking spaces, and then pedestrians coming out from between the cars. There is too much going on.

Not only that, one of those fatal pedestrian struck incidents was earlier this week.

We need raised crossing or something. The cross town bike path is awesome but eventually you get to these massive intersections with long lights people do their best to beat

Exactly…the accident could’ve been the result of a DWI…who knows…regardless, editorialized titles should be avoided when providing links to news articles

Obviously, distracted driving is a major issue, yet there is no evidence as of yet to show that this accident was caused by that

Investigators can and will look at cell records to determine if it may have played a role. Even things that supposedly “delete” keep a backup record that can be unlocked by dumping the entire phones memory onto a hard drive.

You judged what led to the crash with zero facts. That’s the umbrage. It’s likely family/friends of any of the three dead saw your comment. Is it that hard to imagine the pain your careless thought may have caused them? Next time, how about waiting for some facts before judging with your thoughts.

2

draculasbitch t1_j1qh3s6 wrote

You posted your original thoughts a mere four hours after the accident and you say you went by the scene this morning (a day later) and saw no skid marks. I assume you did this out of a morbid scene of justification for your insensitive comment yesterday. I don’t think anyone is for distracted driving even though most of us have done it. Phone/music/eating/driving/smoking/yelling at the kids. Try and put yourself in someone else’s shoes. How would you like to read a stranger blaming your family member before any facts are known? That was my point.

This wasn't an instance of a driver hitting a pedestrian. Although that is a big problem for WH.

This crash happened on Simsbury Road (aka CT-185) and Timberwood Rd (a residential street). I couldn't tell you what the speed limit is on Simsbury road, because there aren't any signs showing speed limit on that stretch of road, but it appears to be 45 miles per hour further down the road.

If I were to guess what happened here, someone was driving way over the speed limit down 185 and someone who wasn't paying attention tried turning onto that road from Timberwood. Or someone crossed the center line on 185. Won't know without further information.

Rich_Voice4482 t1_j1t1bk8 wrote

Speed cameras do not. You are thinking of red light cameras, but it is really a wash. There are less right-angle crashes “t-bones” but more rear-end collisions because people tend to stop shorter.

Either way traffic enforcement cameras definitively save lives. There have been numerous studies.
