Hello,

My wife and I are looking to buy our first king size mattress and I have extensively researched, but feel that I am experiencing information overload and need some advice on what direction to go in… our budget is $2500 and we have looked at standard box store offerings like sealy, beautyrest, and king koil… these all seem fine, but I am unsure how they compare to the offerings from online retailers like dreamcloud or saatva? It seems like most online retailers meet the online hype from what I have read, but with something like a mattress, I would prefer to go try and purchase from a store. I would most certainly consider online if the quality is equal to or better then a brick and mortar store at a lower price point… If anyone has recommendations for a retailer in central Connecticut, I would greatly appreciate that.

If it helps guide us in a direction,I’m 5’ 10”, 220, sleep on my sides and a little bit of stomach. I do sleep a little hot and would prefer to be cool at night.My wife is 5’ 8” 175 and sleeps mostly on her back and sides.

We have some CT local manufactures not to far out from Central CT. These guys are a local factory and showroom in Bethany https://www.restopedicmattress.com/ hard to beat a place that can literally make one to fit your needs.

There is a small factory in Bethany that makes mattresses for the national retailers but they will make one to order for you. We used them for our son's mattress-- he needed full size but in king/queen length. Great quality.

Costco online. They'll deliver and set up and haul away old. If you don't like it at any point, online return and they'll pick it up.

We used to go to Norwalk Mattress. If they’re still around, it’s worth a look. They made their own and we loved it.

We bought ours at pilgrim furniture. The experience was so so. They must be on commission, they tried to upsell and get us to buy add ons. The mattress guy was ok, a bit pushy, but ok once he realized we weren't buying all the add ons. Similar experience at Raymore and Bob's. Very pushy. Commission driven, like buying a car. Know what you want, do some research and you'll be fine.

The best mattress we bought was a Setra at Macy's. I was returning something and went to use the mens room, back in the furniture section. Didn't realize they sold mattress. Got a $3000 mattress on clearance for $1200. Only catch was no delivery. Worth it for $1800 in my pocket.

I sometimes see high end, brand new mattresses at auction. They are unused, but the buyer refused delivery, so they can't be resold, so they dump them at an auction house. If you're patient, you could score.

Been to both pilgrim and bobs and experienced something very similar, the mattresses seem good, but the experience could be better… this kind of pushes me to online retailers, where I think I could get the same quality, but at cheaper price because less middle men?

I bought one at pilgrim. After 5 years we got concave sections where we regularly slept. Tried a different brand at Pilgrim, spent big bucks on it and still my fat ass leaves a divot.

I’ve got someone sleeping in my guest room on the best mattress I ever owned. It’s stiff when you go to bed, but you awake in heaven. No divots. I can’t wake them up to strip the bed and get the name. Nag me tomorrow and I might look to see what it was.

I think you can buy some of the online mattress at target. Seem to recall seeing purple or on of the other brands sold in store.

I've had a queen size bob-o-pedic(Bob's Discount Furniture) for 10 years that I got as an overstock from The Pit for $350 with a box spring and it has been the best mattress I've ever owned or slept on. I believe it is the medium firmness. I have a spill proof cover on it that I have replaced a few times, but the mattress itself has not show any wear in comfort.

I know everyone's taste is different, but worth checking out.

I have a Bobopedic from Bob's Discount Furniture - I know that when I purchased my mattress in 2015, the mattress, bed frame, headboard, and delivery in assembly all came out to about $1950. I've been sleeping on this mattress for 7 years, absolutely love it

Just an anecdote, i have never slept better than with my Casper mattress. We bought a king about a year ago and never looked back. They are much cheaper options and you can try them in west hartford

This might not help since I’m not sure if you can try them anywhere, but Layla‘s HQ is based in New Haven. So at least you’d be supporting a local company. They are sold online only AFAIK

We have one and LOVE it. It has 2 sides, soft and firm, so you can choose, and sleeps very cool.

Saatva has a showroom in NYC. I went to test their mattresses last year and end up buying the king classic for $1800 on sale.

It feels better than the $4500 matrices I tested on places like MattressFirm.

Just putting in a plug for one of the online brands, OkiOki. I am in love with our bed and it came all rolled up vacuum packed in a box delivered straight to our house. I couldn't believe it. They have a risk free 365 day trial and free returns. They come in soft, firm and two kinds of hybrid. We got the OkiFlex which is amazingly comfortable but still supportive and has a really awesome keep-cool fabric. I'm a 3/4 turn side/stomach sleeper and it's just what I needed. The King OkiFlex is $950. I know this sounds like a commercial, I'm just really happy with it! We've had it about 2.5 years now and I still say, "Oh, hello bed. You understand me" every time I lay down. 😂

Gold Bond Mattress's are made right in Hartford. They are fourth generation independent family owned and they build a great quality mattress. Go to an independent retailer rather that a big box store.

We got our mattress from the Mattress Firm during COVID lockdown, and it was quite a pleasant experience. We loved a certain mattress in store and we asked if they have any overstocks for a better price and lo and behold, they did and were more than happy to sell the premium mattress at a discounted price and we love it.

ONE THING I WISH I THOUGHT ABOUT BEFORE THE PURCHASE -

Most mattresses now come with an adjustable frame. If you are buying a king, please consider if a split king may work better for you. We have a queen and I have awoken in the middle of the night practically upright because we do not have a split and someone is watching TV using the recline. Just a thought.

I love my nectar mattress. Purchase and delivery were super easy and they have a 365 day in home trial. I think there are also some places you can lay on one in store but I’m not sure. They also have cooling technology you can get for an extra 100$.

Mattress firm has stuff in your price range. Bought a king size sealy from them with an adjustable base one year ago and no issues.

Macys also sells mattresses. Both places usually offer 0% interest if you pay off balance in one year.
