I lost my license a few weeks ago and have been gearing up to go to the DMV for a replacement. There seem to be a multitude of situations (renewals, theft, etc) that call for different paperwork, different IDs required upon the day of the appointment. Maybe I'm just having a really tough morning here, but i cannot find the list of items they'll require when I go for simply losing my license. Surely someone on this sub has misplaced or otherwise required a duplicate license at some point. Could you save me a bit of trouble and let me know what you needed to bring? What I assume: SS card, some mail from current address, birth certificate.

My wife had applied for a replacement license online, it was delivered by mail in about 2 weeks. We try to stay out of the DMV if at all possible.

I would love to do that, but the online replacement requires you to know your license number. I'm not sure how anyone remembers that.

I always have a scan of my license.

But also it’s saved many places.

Always scan and keep a copy of your license.

I use a program called 1password and keep info like this stashed in there so it’s always at my fingertips.

Anyway, if you filed taxes look there. Also in your insurance policy documents.

I rainman'd my way out of a ticket once by reciting my DL#. I have problems though.

Your doctor's office would have likely taken a copy at some point, to verify your identity. If you have a primary care physician, try there?

Had to replace mine last week at the DMV. I had a scan of my old one and it took about 5 mimutes after my number was called and cost me 35 dollars.

That’s pretty annoying. As is all of the people saying that you should have saved your #, taken pictures, etc. Check with your car insurance company.

I mailed my request for address change I've heard nothing back. Online is not working for me either. That's life sometimes

They have DMV express locations that handle license renewals/replacements. I would recommend there rather than the actually DMV. You’ll be in and out so much quicker as long as you have an appointment

When i go to make an appointment on the DMV site, i have to select a reason for visit. When i select "license/ID services", it automatically removes express locations from my list of available options. Should i just call to make an appointment?

Seems pretty straightforward for in person. Fill out a form, make an appointment. Usually, the confirmation emails about the appointment will tell you what to bring specifically.

Thank you. I have the filled out form and appointment is made. The emails did not tell me specifically what to bring. I see several lists of required documentation for other instances, but not specifically for a replacement license.

I mean, they allow you to fill out the form and e-mail it to them. Then, they send you a link for payment. It doesn’t mention about submitting additional documents. If you’re worried you won’t have something. Then, I’d go that route. The link I provided, you just change the tab towards the bottom from in-person to e-mail, for that info.

I'll probably try that, thank you for your help. I don't see the DMV not requiring more proof of ID, especially since i dont have the license number on hand, but If it's that easy then ill be pleasantly surprised :)

Thank you for this very timely post. I need to renew my driver's license next week and was dreading going to the DMV. You just reminded me I can now renew online and saved me a trip. Thank you! It's been 10 years since I renewed and you couldn't do it online back then. Awesome!
