I have a friend who is looking for trans-friendly nail salons in the state. Their friend is coming to visit and they want to get their nails done together, but the visiting friend has had negative experiences elsewhere due to being transgender. Any recommendations? Bonus for Hartford County.

Linda's Beauty Nails in South Windsor is my suggestion. I've been going there for a few years now and I've seen all types of people in there, including trans people. I, myself, am not trans but I have definitely had negative experiences in places because of how I look (colored hair, tattoos, piercings, wears all black). Linda and her team are nothing but welcoming and kind. I've never seen anyone there treat anyone with disrespect.

Also everyone there does amazing work it's very worth it!

We've had a nice experience at Diamond Nail in Middletown. Very clean, and professional. They kept complimenting my fiancées hands and were perfect on correct pronouns.

I have seen men at Charm Nails in Farmington, and they are very nice to everyone as far as my experience goes. I'm sorry I can't speak to how a trans person would be treated, as I have never noticed, but that's my best suggestion <3

How could the nail salon employees tell they were trans? Are you sure they were upset with their genitalia or maybe it's something else? We're like in the top 3 for trans friendly states, I'm not being a dick.

Because there are varying stages of transition for trans people. They deserve to be treated equally whether it's "obvious" or not. I'm glad to live in a place that's considered trans friendly, but the experiences she's had still happened here, so I'm just trying to garner recommendations to try and help her avoid that.

I'm sorry she's had that experience, shedding light on a topic is always the best solution so you're being a great friend

Where do you live? The nail salons I've been to wouldn't bat an eye over a trans person. My personal favorite salon is in Ellington but they are typically booked unless you are willing to go at an off time.

My friend lives in the central region but I'd bet they are willing to travel. And it will likely be a mid-week visit, so maybe they'd have some luck. If you share the name I can pass it on.

Nail Spa. They're a great place. It's just very small so that's why it's tough to get an appointment.

I mean I went with my wife as a straight male. Had no problem beyond falling asleep in the foot jacuzzi massage chair. Was snoring and everything, now I know why it’s important my wife has her spa days.

Because there's thousands of nail salons and I'd like to crowdsource personal experiences to narrow it down.

I mean but you’re talking about a very narrow subset of the population. They need to be trans + go to a nail salon. I imagine it’s very stressful as a trans person to walk into a new situation and not know how you’ll be treated so I can understand the need but you’re probably going to have to do a little leg work on this.

Should you have to? No, in a perfect world this wouldn’t be an issue at all, but this isn’t a perfect world. I mean in my experience at most nail salons they are pretty business like. “What color? Do you want them cut?” I’d pick someplace nearby with good reviews and give them a call.

I understand your point, but if I can garner positive experiences and recommendations here then that at least gives a jumping off point.

People who do nails want money...they'll paint anyone's nails. I used to go with my wife to the nail/spa place and they'd always ask me if I wanted my nails painted after they were done with the pedicure, because then they could charge us more.

I think sometimes people confuse transphobia with not kissing your ass. If you want the red carpet rolled out for you just because you belong to a certain group, you're gonna have a bad time wherever you go. If you want your nails painted and to be treated just the same as any other customer, you should be fine anywhere...

She's not looking for a red carpet, she just doesn't want to be humiliated and would like to be treated like any other person. That's not been the experience, hence looking for suggestions.

You can't go into it expecting the worst. This is Connecticut. Not rural Kentucky. Go in, ask for what you want, in a way that says "I'm here paying for your services" and either they are going to say, here's your chair (nearly 95 percent likely) or there's the door, which again, were in CT.

And if they are the kind of asshole that would refuse your business, tell them you wouldn't let those hack jobs touch your fabulous nails and walk out like a boss

I think you are mostly right for Connecticut. But depending on where OP's friend is visiting from, it's not hard to imagine her having a tough time or feeling disrespected
