I recently bought a car from my father who lives out of state. This might be a dumb question, but am I able to get emissions testing done prior to registering the car in my name or do I need to get a temporary registration first? The site of the shop I’d go to says to bring the cars registration, license and insurance, would it be a problem that the registration is currently in my fathers name and doesn’t match my license? Not sure how particular they are.

I’ll get the temp registration if need be but would love to avoid 2 DMV trips if possible.

You dont need temp plates. I just transferred my out of state plates and never needed them.

You can use the current plates to get emissions. Also, you save $42 doing that (the 30 day temp tag fee).

30 day temp is $63 - 10 day temp is $21

Holy Jesus. No wonder people just drive on fake plates, last temp tag I got was a 30-day drive home from FL and it was $3.

To do the test they need a place on the DMV database to put the results. You need to get temp plates for them to do the test. Once done you can get your perm plates.

Oh so it’s not like a form I get from the testing center saying the car passed that I would then bring to the DMV?

Yeah it’s a pain in the ass, since it’s out of state you’ll have to temp reg it in CT then go to emissions then go back with proof of taking the test. FYI, it doesn’t even need to pass emissions for the reg, just needs to show you went to get into the state database.

Ah gotcha. And I’m able to transfer my currently out of state license to CT at the same time I get the temp registration?

That I don’t know! I haven’t been to the dmv with how they operate now with the appointment method, hopefully someone else can chime in.
