You need grass seed of the same variety or you'll have a patch of a different color.

Buy the larger bag, you'll use it eventually. Throw down twice what the bag says. Rake it lightly and keep it damp for a week or two.

You can take plugs of existing grass, transplant them to the bald spot, and they'll fill in pretty quickly.

Grass grows by sending out feelers, so an established plant fills in surprisingly fast. Plugs take about 2 weeks to establish, then they spread.

Growing the grass back is the easy part.

Hard part is stopping the dog doing exactly the same thing tomorrow.

Make sure you’ve tamped or rolled the soil. Just tossing dirt in a hole does not fill it, next time it rains it’ll settle and you’ll get a big muddy dip in the yard that nothing will grow in.

In terms of covering it it depends on where you are located right now. It’s really too late to plant grass seed in most of the cooler areas of the US (it needs about two weeks to sprout and another couple weeks to establish before a frost). Looks like it may be warmer there so you may be fine. A bag of local grass seeds from the big box store, put it down a bit heavier than the instructions and lightly rake it in. Cover with straw and keep damp until it sprouts, after about two weeks after sprouting reduce watering to only a couples times a week to promote deeper root growth.

It’s also worth figuring out why your dig dug the hole though, otherwise it’s likely they will just do it again.

Throw some micro clover seed down. Fixes nitrogen to the soil, grows quickly, doesn't need to be mowed, can be walked on easily, comes back every year.

We have clover and straggler daisy in our front and back yards. We have to mow maybe twice a summer because it never gets over 6-8 inches.

You should just let the dog finish building your bomb shelter and then just contract him out

He may have a whole hog marinating somewhere who said the yard was in the way

I actually used to puppy sit a dog bc I was afraid she was being malnourished and she recently passed away because I didn’t have time off to take her from where she was and housing restrictions kept her from staying with me so yeah no ..your judgements are obviously superficial though ;)

Ya He just likes digging for the most part. Id just prefer him not to in the yard. I filled the hole mostly with what he dug out. I just covered the top layer with flower earth

By all means if he were temporarily evicted from the premises and then reintroduced with some unsatisfactory new digging area say idk with maybe a little cayenne pepper on it so when he goes to sniff the new growth on his former project he would be formally discouraged from recommitting his crime I say total success

The answer is just simply and difficulty balancing pet behavior with good gardening/landscaping but obviously requires equal parts both

That’s one mighty hole though. If you do regrow the grass and he does it elsewhere like say you did put cayenne on the new grass and he didn’t dig it burning his nose perhaps there’s some other outlet you could provide him to redirect this behavior

Just an idea and a hole is no reason at all to get rid of any pup

Like teething is no reason to toss your kid there should be some viable reasonable and inexpensive solution. In short he’s digging there for a reason that’s more your problem to solve than the hole itself. Good luck. Hope you the best and your furry friend.
