Where is this? I've never seen gutters or downspouts like this.

Germany. They are made of zinc. PVC are also common, especially for DIYers.

They look very sturdy and well made. Not like the cheap aluminum ones we have in the US.

So my plan is to bury the horitontal pipe in the ground and have the downpipe come off the wall at the bottom and go in to the ground.

Just be careful where the water runs off, it could cause other problems if not properly channeled.

Thanks. All rain water is channeled in to open canal systems that run through this region of Northern Germany.

I think a simple leaf screen should help alongside the trimming. Don't got broke on those TV advertised ones.

Until clogged by leaves

Yes, this was also a problem. The gutters were full of leaves. We cleaned them all out and will be trimming the trees above the house. We may also insert a leaf catcher at the top of the downpipe.

Any other suggestions?
