I am working on a simple EL driver circuit based on this circuit from Jeri Elsworth.

The only problem is that I want to shrink the board tremendously and found SMD equivalents to everything except the NTE123AP transistor.

I have looked at Google to try and find a solution but all I keep getting are SMD transistors with wildly different characteristics from the NTE123AP. If I were to do any more research I honestly wouldn't know where to start. I don't really know the proper things to look for when comparing THT components with SMD components.

I've used THT components for years but I am new to SMD.

What would be a decent SMD equivalent to this transistor?

Have you tried using the parametric search on mouser or digikey? Because utilising that, I can find lots of transistors that would work for your application, like the BCP/BCX55T for example, although it is a little slower.

I am actually not familiar with the parametric search. How would I go about performing a parametric search in Digikey or Mouser?

Go to the transistor section and filter by the characteristics of yours.

BC846B,215, or if you want two per package, BC846BPDW1T1G

The 16v+ capacitor will be larger than a thru-hole transistor.

That transformer's gonna be pretty big too.

dumb question - is the through-hole version catastrophically too big? You could trim the leads down to short stubs and then solder them onto surface mount pads.
