Need to build up on current subfloor (which is T&G OSB) to meet the level of adjoining carpet edge at the proper height. I am replacing 3/4" hardwood with .285" engineered vinyl. Should I put the extra $$$ into 7/16" OSB T&G, or will gluing+screwing normal square sheathing be sufficient? Trying to find the sweet spot between spend and squeak prevention.

You don't need t+g. Do offset seams between subflooring and build up.

What's under the floor? Tongue and groove, with a bead of adhesive along the groove, becomes a moisture barrier. That's good if you're above a crawl space or other area with moisture. Tongue and groove also supports more weight along the seams. Finally, tongue and groove won't grind its edges into sawdust over the years, opening gaps in the seams and causing noises. So you have to decide if these things are important to you.

Yes, great question. It was originally a crawl space, but now there is a full basement underneath.

Its possible I wasn't clear enough in the OP. The question is regarding adding another layer of OSB over the existing OSB subfloor.

My mistake. No need for tongue and groove then.
