Cut the drywall Into smaller pieces and slide behind the items or use furling srips and drop the ceiling below the pipe and butt the drywall to the vent.

One of these options is your best bet. While you're up there on a ladder redo that tape on what I'm assuming is some kind of access hole cut in to the vent, or if you're really feeling fancy install a small access door instead.

Ya the tape job done before was rough I think that'll be an easy fix that will look good.

Ah by strapping I meant furling strips, do you think the drywall would look okay butted up against the vent?

I think it would look fine. Add a clean up strip, maybe a little cove, maybe a j-bead on the edge or your drywall, a caulk bead. Whatever floats your boat.

I agree with this. Clear the pipe, have your drywall die into the sides of your duct work.
