I hate this part of the house where the previous owners installed shiplap wall paneling in small horizontal pieces and it's not nailed but glued and falls off constantly. Underneath it seems to be not drywall though. Or at least not regular wall that can just be painted. Once we take the shiplap off all completely, and there is only sheetrock maybe or insulation (not sure what it is, hard and pink n white) what do we have to do to the wall to make it smooth? Is that drywall? And can we do this on a shoestring budget and with no/few chemicals that will affect a pregnant woman? It's right by the bedroom.

Without pictures your question is the equivalent of one hand clapping.

If it's pink it might be polystyrene foam board? Can you see the studs?

Without seeing it, I'd suggest wallpaper?

Have to love everyone that thinks HGTV trends will last forever.

Let’s ask the real question, how many barn doors did the previous Owen install for you to change out?

This was the house we bought. The Realtor/Interior Decorator/Wife of the couple we bought it from shiplapped about a third of the walls and luckily only 1 barn door and a wall for a pocket door that 3x times winder than it needs to be (like how much pumpkin spice you need to hide?) We flattened the walls nearly perfectly, added Ikea complements to the master wall and switched the barn door to a homemade magic door (hidden mount hardware). The next owner will probably say how tacky it is on Reddit 😅 https://imgur.com/a/Pa3v9y4

To be fair, there is one spot where I think the shiplap looks good and we keot that piece.

Either nail it up to the studs or rip it all down and put drywall up. Both are pretty easy and cheap

Get a finish nail gun. Locate the studs in the wall in question. Run nails up and down on each stud at each horizontal corse of the shit lap. If u use a small enough nail u can run nails thru the ship lap and into the wallboard on angles and it will hold the shiplap as well. Watch out for wires and pipes as that could be a problem

Can we get some pictures? My guess is the constant temperature movement weakens the adhesive. If it's an exterior wall. But the scary thing is it could also be covering up something, like water damage.

"And can we do this on a shoestring budget and with no/few chemicals that will affect a pregnant woman? It's right by the bedroom." - it's totally possible, my guess is it is sheetrock behing the wall (if they didn't pick the right glue, they didn't prep this and just HDTV'd it. So you would have to remove all the boards, and then respackle and sand the wall (lots of dust) then paint,,, but like all house projects it could be easy on paper but then turn out hard.

The summer of 2021 I decided to replace my siding on one side of the house, ripped it off and the entire wall was rotting so had to replace that, and the vinyl windows because they were a little weathered and broke as I tried to remove them.. a $1.2k project ended up being $9k by the time I was done.

Maybe it’s sheet foam pink and white? Wont hold nails semi hard or stiff but able to push in make dents? If it is drywall a big box of paste is 10 bucks large drywall blade same. Id get a hawk or trough to get the mud on the blade well. Try you hand at laying on new drywall paste flat.
