So I have a custom made loft bed for my 4 year old son. The space by the ladder is open, and I am a bit worried that he will somehow roll out and fall down, so I would like to cover this space somehow, with some sort of simple solution that my son can open and close himself.

I honestly don't even know what to Google in order to find a solution for this, my best guess would be fixing some sort of "beam" or "gate" to the wall next to the space, that can be opened, maybe hinges? Maybe a magnet fixed to the wall that the solution fixes to when it is opened?

The bed is fixed to the wall, so any solution can be fixed either to the wall next to the open space above the ladder, or to the post of the actual bed.

I think I can manage the actual making of the thing, what I really lack is the creativity and/or experience to come up with a solution. So any help would be very welcome!

Picture of a very similar bed with the space in question circled in red:
