I’m pretty sure I did everything right except for the drain. For the drain I took bad advice and simply bought a drain cover, raised it with some spare tile, and sealed it with thin set. The result is that when I would take a shower, every tile within a certain radius of the the drain would ooze thin set when stepped on, and the grout (epoxy) would be forced up.

My assumption is that the drain needed to be properly sealed and since it wasn’t, water seeped under the tile and softened/expanded the thin set, forcing the grout to pop out and the thin set to ooze freely.

How would you fix the problem? I have taken up all the tile, cleaned it, and prepared the floor to be re-tiled; I just want to make sure I do it right this time. I need to raise the drain somehow, and then it needs to be sealed; I’ve lost all my confidence so I’m not certain how I would do this.

Edit: DO NOT USE “pro stone and tile adhesive” even if the guy from Lowe’s recommends it to you. It’s not the same as thin set and not meant for shower beds. Use legit thin set, powdered form, and mix it yourself. Thank you everyone for the information, lesson learned! God bless, can’t wait to take a shower.
