Hello everybody!

I need to extend a kitchen backsplash and luckily the home came with some extra tiles. The tiles are from 2010 by an Argentinian company called Ilva, and appear to have a sort of cardboard mesh web on the back.

I only need to add 1 additional row so I will be taking individual tiles apart from the 3x3 square sheets they came as. However, the cardboard-like material isn't really coming off.

Do I need to remove this? Also bonus question for any heros here. Is there a way to determine if these are porcelain tiles vs. ceramic?

No. Some 4x4 tile mfrs ship them in sheets and the webbing keeps the proper spacing during installation (just as it does with smaller or patterned tiles). Be sure to check for a pattern by spreading out a bunch in a square (I suggest at least 3’x3’) so you get a good look at how they match or relate to each other. If not, you run the risk of noticing too late, or worse having a visitor (like your father in law) point it out to you after the job is done.
