You can cut the drywall back flush with the beam, and run a PC of 2x4 against the beam for a nailer. That way you can but a PC of sheetrock up to the existing one and screw into the new 2x4 you hung

Thanks! That's pretty much what I was thinking but wasn't sure about the piece that hung over the beam. So I should cut along the length of the beams and run the 2x4 along the entirety?
