A friend hung about half the drywall on this basement ceiling but is no longer available to finish it. I looked up some tutorials but wasn't quite sure how to continue this specific work in progress versus starting from scratch.

He said something about running 2x4s along the beam, but he wasn't very clear on what I should do for the space where the drywall already goes past the beam.

Here's where I'm starting from: https://imgur.com/a/4Mks2sy

I'd really appreciate any tips or advice.

You can cut the drywall back flush with the beam, and run a PC of 2x4 against the beam for a nailer. That way you can but a PC of sheetrock up to the existing one and screw into the new 2x4 you hung

Thanks! That's pretty much what I was thinking but wasn't sure about the piece that hung over the beam. So I should cut along the length of the beams and run the 2x4 along the entirety?

Typically, you run the edge of the drywall to the center of the drywall so they meet. In your case because you are a beginner sister a 2x to the joist and screw away. Make sure the 2x’s are at the same level it will make taping much easier.

Normally the sheets should all fall mid-way between the floor joists since 16 & 24-inch joist spacing lines up with 4x8-foot sheets of drywall.

You can cut it back to the middle of the floor joist and screw it in. Go slow when screwing it in, or better yet, spend $5 and get a drywall dimpler bit that should prevent you from over-driving the screws.

Buy/rent/borrow a drywall lifter if you have a lot to do, or google "how to hang drywall by yourself" and "drywall deadman". You can build a jig out of a couple of pieces of 2x4 to help hold up the sheets.

You're definitely going to need to secure a 2x4 to the left side, by the closet area so you can hang the sheet along that edge. You can't have a long edge like that unsupported.
