I am painting closet shelves using "Sherwin Williams ProClassic Interior Waterbased Acrylic-Alkyd" paint. I spent hours reading and watching videos to get a smooth finish but no matter what I do I keep getting roping from my brush. I bought a high quality 100% purdy soft nylon brush (I also tried an nylon/polyester blend). I mixed and strained the paint. I avoided overworking the paint with my brush and it just never flattens. It's about 60 degrees where I am painting with humidity about 30%.
I then tried using Floetrol paint additive but that made no difference and it sounds like Floetrol shouldn't be added to this particular paint. I tried rolling the paint on instead with a good roller but it just caused stippling which was even more unattractive. I don't have the option to spray the paint.
Comparing to some trim in my house the trim is much much smoother. There are only very fine brush lines and in some places I don't see brush lines at all. I thought maybe the trim was an oil based paint but when I rubbed it with acetone it came off so I assume it's water based. I don't know who painted the trim or with what.
