You have a water softener? Did you use water from the softener? Had a buddy that grouted with water from a softener where the salt level was too high and turned it white.

No, but do you think it’s possible for efflorescence to appear this quickly? Overnight? I thought it was something that happens over time

Actually. There was still some mortar clinging to the edges of the tiles. It was under the grout line so I didn’t think too much of it. Is it possible the wet grout reactivated it and caused it to show on top?
