I have accidentally dropped an heavy object with a sharp side onto the floor, and left behind a 4mm deep, 1cm long hole in the floor. The floor is patterned timber and now the wood is showing. I have tried wood putty but the colour isn't quite right, should I contact someone for this?

ps. it is a rental house so I need to get it fixed

You can get 'wood filler sticks' online. You get a set of several colors for $10 or so. You can use one, then another and try to blend them. There's a lot of these kinds of products, so someone more expert may have some more specific advise.

Contact the landlord. Thats what security deposit money is for. Let them deal with it. Never try to fix a rent place yourself

If it's $10 of wood filler sticks it's definitely better to do yourself. Landlord is going to hire it out and that guy will charge a whole lot more.

Unfortunately most landlords will 'take you to the cleaners' over this kind of stuff. Try fix it yourself in an only additive way so if it does f'up it can be restored back to the start. This way the landlord can use your money to pay his brother 2000$ an hour to fill it with the same stuff and look worse but it will be 'ok' because it was done by a 'professional'
