I would make sure you clean around where the flapper sits. Make sure you have the correct parts for that toilet. Sometimes the universal crap can cause problems. Go to a plumbing supply for parts.

I just hope they still make parts, this Sterling toilet's the ripe age of 25.

Psssh....there are places which sell OEM parts from the 30's and earlier. Not cheap, but they still make them!

If it flushes itself, it's overfilling. Either your fill-valve is faulty, or incorrectly set. There isn't any other reason. I'm a trade plumber, trust me. Some images would help. If your flush-syphon is a telescopic one, this could also be adjusted incorrectly. Post some pics, we'll get you sorted 💪

You can try fine sandpaper where the flapper seats. I've had success this way. Seems just enough of the previous ( deteriorated) flapper remained stuck there so new flapper wasnt seating positively flat for a seal there. LIGHTLY sand the rough china there, rinse, replace flapper with ANOTHER new one in case first got warped or otherwise compromised. Good Luck! 🚽

Are you sure your float stop is adjusted properly? Water should stop before it reaches the overflow.

GeneralN0m OP t1_ja1a8gn wrote

Yep, I've adjusted it to both ends of the available adjustments and evenly between. I'll make sure to keep it below while troubleshooting.

could be your flapper is too light ( or uneven / dirty like the other person said). put a small weight like plasticine / sticky putty / glue a washer on it. might help.

I visited my uncle at his house for the first time a couple years ago (he lived on the other side of the US) and I was pretty shocked that his sink, tile, toilet, and bathtub were all baby blue. Bit jarring lol I'm sure it originated from the '70s or 60s.

White. I got the lucky forever default toilet.

The default toilet doesn’t leak though

Just replace? Save time and money!

It's the same old plumbing joke; The smaller problem revealed how bad it really was.

You can more than likely replace all the interior parts in that toilet for less than $25. You're never gonna find a brand new toilet for $25. Least expensive I've seen through a supply house is roughly $100 unless you're able to get it at trade cost.

I might have to try and hunt down a ceramic tank and lid; Everything else was just swapped yesterday including the flush valve gasket. I'm sure someone has one extra with the right bolt config, if not a whole ceramic set to try.

Honest-Sugar-1492 t1_ja3tqeq wrote

Good luck with that. Did it crack? Some companies save them for sale but most don't want to bother using up the real estate to store them. A new tank likely won't match up even same brand. Sterling is Kohler's bargain line. Time to buy the whole combo ( tank and bowl) A+ for effort though!

Just replace the toilet? Doubt universal parts are designed for 25 years old toilets

GeneralN0m OP t1_ja1fqrp wrote

Probably not made for that. I'm looking into a way to buy a toilet and have grocery money.
