I just watched a documentary on the making of that album and they talked about the diver photo. I wish I could remember where they said the shot was taken. It might actually be this place.

It was at Mono Lake for sure. I believe the story was that the model had to do a handstand underwater long enough for the ripples to dissipate.

People need to add the location to titles. This is California, US I believe.

It’s just north of June Lake, on the eastern side of the Sierras.

You can find all the info you could ever want googling ‘Mono Lake’….

I wanted to go here so bad when I was in Death Valley back in November. Just didn't have the time and road closures were making things difficult.

TravelingPhotoDude t1_jbllsco wrote

Yeah the mountain passes are pretty much no go from October until late May/early June.

When I bought Wish You Were Here in 1976 this photo fascinated me.

I visited there in 2002. Unfortunately, it was very windy that day.

nicmos t1_jbkz80d wrote

clearly not a recent picture, with all the snow they've been having.

cosmicevening t1_jblv6vg wrote

Yep. We were there during all the snow and the roads to this are blocked.

Belgemine t1_jbmfgay wrote

Well there was an avalanche where Mono lake is closest to the road, so it will be closed for some time.

What!? It wasn't windy? I don't think I've ever visited there on a calm day. Lucky you!

I'm gonna guess mono lake is in the US, due to the fact Americans assume everyone lives in the US

Welcome to Reddit! Conceived in Boston then built and based out of California.

I'm sure OP had his nationalistic USA pants on though because we are clearly all so ignorant.

Seriously, reddit is an American invention. You signed up for this.

Mono Lake is a salty lake (no natural outlet river) that is located on Rt 395, at the end of the hwy 120 out of Yosemite National Park in the East Slope of the Sierra Nevada. It has a great number of "salt flies" and very small shrimp (sea monkeys) It is a place where Pacific sea gull go to breed on the volcanic islands that in wet years are islands. The area is very scenic with volcanic cones, tufa towers (spring fed calcium deposits) It is at Lee Vining California. Due East from Yosemite in Central California.

maddcatone t1_jbksxe8 wrote

Really wish Tufa wasn’t so rare. I learned all to late how nice it is to use for terrariums, aquariums and decorative plantings/mountings. Moss also grows SOOO well on it. Alas mono lake is the only Place I know of where it can be found these days and you can’t collect it anymore. Artificial tufa sucks in comparison

1

randomcanyon t1_jbkui84 wrote

I have seen these tufa tower way out of the water when you can walk around them. This summer the lake will probably be very high and the Tufa will be out "there". I never took any Tufa from Mono Lake for my rock gardens. You can find Calcium deposits out at Pyramid Lake Nevada. A less salty lake, It has huge fish. It is out on an Native American area and is north of Reno NV on the East slope of the Sierra.

Yep, and the Top Gun school is out that way so as you are driving to Pryamid Lake you can sometimes see them flying in the sky. Also Frey Ranch Bourbon is my absolute favorite Bourbon. My parents live in South Lake Tahoe and I love heading that way when I'm back visiting.
