It’s a called the Whale’s Tail. Visited this summer. Amazing place.

Nice going later this year, can't wait!

This is not the Whale's Tail. This is further north up the coast.
LuckyPlaze t1_irq5b5f wrote
I was just there two months ago. That bit at the end was called the whale’s tail. The trailhead is even named that.

You are wrong. Sorry. Source: I'm costarrican and I've been to both places many many times.

I used to go here all the time. I watched some German tourists get chased out of there for teasing some of the monkeys. It was hilarious!

lol yes I got too close to a monkey with my GoPro and he reached out and grabbed it!!!

Chased out by monkeys? Or by staff?
ObscureLogic t1_irn36az wrote
The monkeys there are so incredibly intertwined with humans. When I was there last year we watched some monkeys wait for a couple to hop in the water and then they started going in their bags. They will grab stuff from you, play literal feet from yo and will yes, absolutely harass you if they don't like you.

Actually, ballena national park in CR looks more.like a whales tail, equally just as beautiful.

Was just there a week ago. So many fricken stairs in that park but the views are worth it.
PPastoria OP t1_irmn65g wrote
Absolutely worth it! We only made it out here because our flight got canceled and I’m so glad it happened!!

I saw sea Turtles hatching there! It was such a surreal experience. Also, the monkeys are little bitches

I was walking on a path there and an iguana ran straight toward me on its back legs. I screamed like a little girl and it ran right between my legs. I heard later that it is quite common there.
PPastoria OP t1_iroeges wrote
Yes I seen plenty of iguanas while there, they don’t seem too bothered by the people though.

I went there to see squirrel monkeys. And I succeeded. One of the most epic experiences of my life.

The one species I didn't see in that country. And I looked in M.A. park.
noronto t1_irp2y2f wrote
When I entered the park one of the Park Rangers was an English speaking person. So, my partner and I started talking to her and she said that she had been their for three months and hadn’t seen any. I didn’t know much about squirrel monkeys, I just knew they were super cute and travelled in large groups. We ended up seeing them while descending one of the hilly treks. I totally missed them but my partner was able to see them. They were super cute and made tiny bird squeaks and we got pictures of them holding hands. We also broke all the rules and strayed into the brush and fed them. Best illegal maneuver ever. I’m so sad now as that trip occurred in 2002. I’m so old.

Kudos to the government for creating public lands in an area that could so easily be a Four Seasons Hotel & Resort
TheBearHooves t1_irnq1dz wrote
I happened to schedule my visit on a government holiday so I went to the beach nearby and was harassed by beach vendors the whole time.
PPastoria OP t1_iroe6vn wrote
Yes the beach vendors can be a bit overwhelming at times. The public beach was nice though, came back a second time at sunrise and I was the only one there, no vendors at all lol.
cmacpapi t1_irnsqrq wrote
There's also a whale tail peninsula just like this, but less luscious and with rockier beaches at the end of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park in Northern Ontario, Canada
mbeebah t1_iroxiq8 wrote
There’s also a whale tail further south on the pacific coast of Costa Rica. It’s in a town called uvita within the marina ballena park.
m_faustus t1_irojqzn wrote
There are usually a lot of people at that beach. And often some scruffy raccoons.

Is El Avion still there? One of the coolest bars I've ever been to. It's an old transport plane that was shot down and they converted the plane into a bar you can sit in.
PPastoria OP t1_irrb7vm wrote
Yes El Avion is still there, our hotel was within walking distance to it but unfortunately we never made it inside. I did drive by it several times and the airplane sitting in the middle caught my attention every time! I will definitely stop in next visit!!!

Almost 20 years ago now, my friends and I rented a house near there. It was 15 of us. Half were already married, half single. Spouses were in attendance. It was a great trip. But the day I remember most was the day we spent just goofing off on the beach near there. We were all approaching 30 but that day we acted like kids, swam in the surf, laid on the sand in a beautiful place. We’d all started careers but none had started their families yet. Today we all have kids and are busy. That day and that place will always be one of the last carefree times before life takes over.

Make sure you bypass those people who are trying to get you to park in one of their lots before you enter the national park. The look official but they have nothing to do with the park.
