I spend a lot of time hiking long trails. This year, one of the trails I did was the Appalachian Trail. One of the things I hear constantly in the backpacking world is that the AT "has no views." And a lot of the time, that's true. You aren't constantly led toward huge vistas like the other big trails. You have to work for them.

Here is one of the many times that the AT does actually have a great view. It's near Fontana Dam, near the park boundary, and it's an absolutely beautiful place!

My husband did the AT a few years back and had some killer views! Not consistently, of course, but he took a couple really incredible shots.

Great pic! On a clear day you can get an amazing view of Fontana Lake from Shuckstack Tower, a little over 3 miles up a trail at the far end of the dam.
