What is the best month to catch a sight like this? I've been wanting to go.

Late September.

Even by Canadian Thanksgiving (about Oct 10) the lake can be frozen over.

But not enough to prevent your eight year old son from walking on the ice and falling into the lake. True story. He's fine Luckily there is a laundromat in Banff
