Thanks! I didn't threaten anyone with a knife but I did stare some people down so they wouldn't walk up while I took the shot lol

was gonna say the same thing. Been there a couple times and it's usually crawling with people.

Oh wow. Was there in 2019. You got the right lighting for the skull look, didn't look much like it when I was there.

How did you manage to get a photo without a million people wandering all around it?

I was there in 2019, it was basically empty. Few peope in sight. Sometimes noone.

Once in a lifetime chance I guess. I did go pretty late in the day so most people were already heading out of the park.

Photoshopped the crowds?

I most definitely did not :) I managed to get a few other shots without anyone in them

How did you get that pic without people in it at that time of day?

I want to say it was luck, but part of me also thinks it was the time of arrival. I got there towards 3 / 4 pm

I’m from the Canadian prairies and visiting Joshua Tree National Park made me feel like I stepped back in time. It felt totally alien compared to what I’m used to.

I also managed to get a shot like this, with no people in it, but yours is a lot nicer!

Finally a place on EarthPorn that I’ve been to! Amazing spot and so many other cool rock formations to check out along the drive. Well worth a day trip out of Palm Springs if you happen to be there. Kids had a blast climbing the rocks! So much beauty in the desert.

awizemann t1_iz0dmrp wrote

Great shot. I was just there and was shocked by how many people drive up, take a pic here, and move on. The path around Skull Rock is SO MUCH MORE than just this rock. Countless other formations rival this, but they require effort (a 1.7-mile loop hike), and there isn't a sign pointing directly at them. I have no idea why this particular rock became so popular, but I can only guess it is because of social media. If you want to see "faces, animals, etc." in the rock formations, stay at Jumbo Rocks campground and take the trail from there or wander around in one of the best national parks there is (well, top 10 at least).

Do the mods have to say “no homophobia” on a subreddit that doesn’t even focus on people? Who is out here being hateful on a sub about pictures of the earth? 😭

it speaks to the state of casual homophobia on reddit that we do need a warning like this.
