This is an interesting photo because there’s no sense of scale. Is this a 10,000 foot mountain on a crystal clear day or a 500 foot cinder cone? Could be either in my mind.

It's a 2500m (8200ft) mountain, but this picture is only showing the top half because of where it is taken from.

It's a beautiful place - I used to hike there a lot when I was in high school. This tarn was a spot I always loved getting to first thing in the morning because it would be frozen over.

That's because when the park was created it was defined as a radius from the peak, so all the farmers cleared up to that radius to make a circle that can be seen from space.

Never would've guessed 2500m. It looked like hill I could sprint up on a minute

Well you know NZ can be proud about mountains and volcanoes and naturally they are part of Maori mythology and so this isn't called Mt Egmont any more.

I seem to remember this volcano got used as a stand-in for Mt Fuji in that Tom Cruise movie. Fuji obviously being really important in Japanese religion.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that mountains are awesome.

When you write your pepeha one of the first few lines is which mountain you belong to. That's how important they are.

I am not sure what mountain I belong to and that is fucking me up right now.

Thats not uncommon. Many of us got cut off from our culture over the years and we are currently living in a time of reconnection and rediscovery. When I needed to write my pepeha I didn't know my mountain either so I thought a bit and chose one that I felt close to. It ended up being the same mountain as mum picked.
