Wow this is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. One question on your settings here, why did you decide to shoot at F18 and F13? My assumption was that after a specific aperture (like around F8) you start losing sharpness but is that not the case or do I need to do some more research? Just curious if you have any insight

Yah typically a lens’ sharpest focal point will be in the mid range. Lens’ generally loose sharpness if you open up the aperture to its max as well eg: F/2.8 is not as sharp as F/8. Every lens is a bit different though. The nikkor 14-24 lens I used here is pretty damn sharp from F/5 to F/18. I shot the foreground at F/18 bc I wanted to make sure everything was in focus. I was closer to the foreground than it appears bc it’s a large pano. I could have stopped down a bit more for the sky but the difference between F/8 and F/13 is negligible and I’m not worried about sharpness in the sky. I could also possibly use the sky for parts of the foreground if I get some movement due to wind.

Maybe an unpopular opinion with Kiwis, but I spent a week in the Canadian Rockies last fall (my second time there) and just got back from 10 days on the south island of New Zealand. I really didn't see much at all in New Zealand that was markedly more beautiful than what you can see in the Jasper/Lake Louise/Banff corridor. Not to mention, thanks to New Zealand's almost complete lack of indigenous mammals, Canada has much, much better wildlife to go with its natural geologic beauty.

That said, Norway has them both beat. :)

Lovely! This one gets the highest honor I can bestow in this subreddit: emailing myself the link so I can set it as a desktop wallpaper. Thanks!

Norway doesn't have Canada beat for wildlife no, just in natural beauty. I rank Norway higher than what I have seen of Alaska also. It's not a huge difference, mind you, just that my trip to Norway (traveling slowly from Bergen to Alesund) was the most beautiful travel experience of my life so far.

The Spiral Tunnels and Wapta Falls are cool sights and low efforts off the highway, and Emerald Lake is the most popular attraction and pretty much Yoho's answer to Lake Louise.

But the two spots I'd recommend the most are the Lake O'Hara area , which is absolutely spectacular (if you're lucky enough to get a spot reserved since they limit visitors), and the Takkakaw Falls area.

Also if you're really into Earth's history the Burgess Shale is a fascinating fossil deposit that you can access via a guided hike.

Excellent thanks for the detailed response. We'll be there last week in September first week in October. Hopefully it won't be too late for good foliage. I also just read that 4 person groups are required for certain areas due to bears?

I second the lake O’Hara area of yoho. Lots around there if you can camp up there for a few days. Trail restrictions do happen due to bear a activity sometimes. Ive seen the 4 person minimum at the hiking trails around moraine lake but not in Yoho.

I've found it very difficult to find shots of many of the Canadian Rockies. I was looking up some place called Mt Hooker which seems to be a massive peak in the Rockies, previously believed to be one of the tallest, and there's information on it but not photos. Must be some remote hiking up there. Have fun!

Tons of remote territory in the Rockies. I’d say 80-90% of the shots you see are of the same 4-5 main lookouts in Banff and sometimes Jasper.

If you are willing to hike or bike, and have a vehicle to get to more remote start points, you get some amazing views. Lots of well maintained trails that tourists don’t really hit.

I hiked Picklejar lakes last summer and it was amazing!! Hardly anyone out and gorgeous views.

I love the Rockies, crazy how flat it is once you leave them on the Alberta side. On a road trip I fell asleep surrounded by tall mountains and woke up in the flattest place I've ever been.
