Note that reservations are required to enter Yosemite Valley right now to deal with the crowds during this event. This is only the case for a few weeks a year when the sun is in just the right spot to get this picture. You can typically enter without reservations.

Edit: seems reservations are only required Fr-Sun for the next 2 weekends in Feb.

It's still crazy that so many people show up for this. Every time I've stayed in the valley in winter it feels like it's just me, the rangers, and the quintessential random old man with the RV. Then I go in summer and it feels like I'm at the mall right when school ends.

I want to recommend the movie Valley Uprising (2014). It's a feel good doc about the history and legends of climbers that have inhabited the valley and how the culture evolved to what it is today.

Another recommendation of a movie about a climber that is even more extreme than Honnold is The Alpinist.

We had to run, we got there just as the clouds parted. My wife was tired, and she walked. We got about five minutes of viewing with the kids (I ran with the stroller, pushing our youngest who was 2 at the time.)

Even with reservations it might take a while to get in. I was at Yosemite right after Christmas for a few days and when I was leaving at 1pm on a Wednesday there was a massive line of cars about 10 miles long trying to get into the park through the south entrance. There was no way even half of them were going to get in before dark. It was the one nice sunny day between storms and the main entrance to the valley had been closed by a rock slide.

I was there that day.

Best part for me was how empty the park was during the day. They were limiting access due to the pandemic, so went early and spent the whole day. Lots of folks who did have tickets were just coming for the firefall, so at times we had bits of the park to ourselves.

At one point I walked in a bit to get a better photo of Yosemite Falls and when I got back over by that little stone bench where John Muir's cabin was there was nobody there at all. Like, I couldn't see anyone, I couldn't hear anyone. That part of the valley that never happens, at least not during the day.

So for five minutes I sat on the bench and felt like I was in the morning of creation. I'll never forget it.

Yosemite used to be a nice place to visit in winter, but last time I went in feb 2020 there was traffic lined up to get in for over a mile. Masketto t1_j8l8ppm wrote

I seriously do not condone this and I understand that what I did was wrong and dangerous, might get downvoted to hell, but I'm gonna share anyway

There is a hike in my province that's been blowing up like crazy with instagrammers over the past few years (Joffrey Lake) because not only does it have some of the most beautiful views in our province's hikes but it's also fairly accessible (only 2hrs hike) and only a 1-2hr drive from a popular tourist ski village (Whistler).

I mean, they have built THREE big parking lots just to try to support the demand of tourists visiting this poor place.

During the peak of COVID, a lot of our hikes were put on a free reservation system to control overcrowding. But this place, Joffrey, they just shut it down for a good long time because I'm assuming even with daily reservations (which for other hikes have booked within 2mins of opening) it would be hard to control the population. So they just completely shut it down, blocked off the parking lots and put a very weak blockade at the entrance.

I had never done the hike though I had done a couple of the others in my province, and while I really did want to do the hike, I didn't want it to be with 1million instagrammers (I myself don't have Instagram or other social media; I just wanted to do the hike for the beauty of the place).

So.....I convinced my very hesitant dad and my 2 cousins to break into the park, lol. My dad parked a decent distance at another non related site, we hiked up, only came across 2 others who coming down and they told us there was only 1 person up there (who we never ended up seeing. Kind of creepy but 🤷‍♀️).

And my goodness, it was probably the thing in my life that I am most fortunate for because such a thing will likely never happen again, I'll never have that opportunity again. And yes the hike was incredibly breathtaking, made more so by the emptiness and solitude, and my gratitude for being able to do it under these conditions

A few weeks prior, I had gone on another popular hike (though this one is less accessible as it's 4-6+hrs each way) (Garibaldi lake), and this one was on a strictly controlled reservation system (took me 3 days to get 2 tickets), so while the population was controlled it was still quite crowded, I mean, enough to annoy my introverted ass, and as beautiful as the hike was, it was just ruined by the more-than-a-few people walking alongside the lake. It just made me all the more grateful for being able to hike Joffrey with no other visitors. A once in a million experience that I can only wish for

Maybe I shouldn’t have used the word anxiety. My wife has an anxiety disorder so I shouldn’t use that term lightly.

However, giant crowds around photographic events totally sucks the joy out of it for me. Jockeying for position is not enjoyable. Also, people have no etiquette these days. You can get you shot set up hours before the crowd shows up and then a literal bus load of people pop out and stand right in front of you.

Have you ever been to something like this or are you just talking out of your ass? It is a fucking zoo and it sucks.

Just wanted to share a quote this reminded me of

>View Blanketed by an azure sky, the orange-yellow rays of the setting sun can, at special times, gift us with a moment of such considerable beauty, we find ourselves momentarily stunned, with frozen gaze. The splendor of the moment so dazzles us, our compulsively chattering minds give pause, so as not to mentally whisk us away to a place other than the here-and-now. Bathed in luminescence, a door seems to open to another reality, always present, yet rarely witnessed. Abraham Maslow called these "peak experiences," since they represent the high moments of life where we joyfully find ourselves catapulted beyond the confines of the mundane and ordinary. He might just as well have called them "peek' experiences. During these expansive occasions, we sneak a glimpse of the eternal realm of Being itself. If only for a brief moment in time, we come home to our True Self.

Guide to the Natural Yosemite Firefall

Hundreds of photographers gather in Yosemite Valley each year for the natural firefall at Horsetail Fall. Why is it called the Yosemite Firefall?

Back in 1872, the owners of the Glacier Point Hotel created a spectacle by pushing an actual bonfire off the edge of the cliff at Glacier Point. The cascade of red-hot embers falling down the cliff looked like a glowing waterfall of light to onlookers below. Although the practice started and stopped several times over the years, by the mid-1900s thousands of people were coming to Yosemite to literally watch the fire fall. This was the original Yosemite firefall.

Eventually, in January of 1968 the director of the National Park Service, George Hartzog, stopped this practice. This man-made event was obviously inconsistent with the park mission to protect the park’s natural wonders. The huge number of spectators were trampling the meadows, and the concessionaires were having to go further and further afield to find enough of their preferred red fir bark to build the fires. Not to mention the fire hazard it created.

Just 5 years after the Yosemite firefall ended in 1973, a talented adventure photographer named Galen Rowell accidentally stumbled across a new firefall-like phenomenon. As he was driving out of the valley on Southside Drive, he spotted a small waterfall off the shoulder of El Capitan that looked molten in the setting sun. He leaped out of his car and ran to the photograph – the first widely-circulated color picture of the natural firefall in Yosemite National Park.

With the image of the falling bonfire at Glacier Point a recent memory, of course the new natural phenomenon has been dubbed the natural Yosemite firefall.

Yellowstone is my favorite place on earth, but seeing Yosemite for the first time was truly surreal. Yellowstone is a 10/10, has everything, but it's so spread out. Yosemite is like taking 80% of Yellowstone's beauty and cramming it into 5% of the area.

Yeah, I haven't gone up in the winter the past few years, but it is night and day from Yosemite in the summer. Apart from a situation like this, there's no big crowds to fight. But, half the "amenities" are closed, and it's cold af.

Even in the summer, there's walk-in camping you can get day of. It'll be crowded but you'll be able to throw a tent down somewhere. There are motels and hotels littered up and down the highway before you get into Yosemite as well. Getting the spot you want in the middle of summer might take 6 months, but don't let that keep you away.

I just checked and you can get a campsite for next month in lower pines
