Seriously that’s one of the most depressing sentences I have ever read.

I know it’s expensive and unsustainable to live there for a lot of people but goddamn that just makes me sad

crankyape1534 OP t1_j8xcktb wrote

It is sad. After Covid it was too hard for me and my little family so we had to leave. Broke my heart.

I lived south side for a few years, but the west side always had the best sunsets.

Magical place, Maui is

Just went to Maui for the first time a few weeks back. We got slammed with rain most days but on occasion some evenings the sun busted through the clouds and delivered some epic sunsets. Man I wish I didn't have to go back home.

k4tertots t1_j8wxlit wrote

I was there when it rained, too! Still very beautiful. Can’t wait to return.

enjoytheshow t1_j8x8c5d wrote

Yeah we got there Thursday 1/26 and barely saw the sun until Tuesday which was a tough pill to swallow on a multi thousand dollar vacation. But the place is so damn beautiful even with the clouds and rain that I just didn’t care after a bit

adavadas t1_j8xwf4v wrote

If it makes you feel any better, the island really needed that rain (and the rains we are getting today and through the weekend). Prior to your arrival, a lot of the island was in Extreme drought conditions, with water use restrictions in place and a high risk of fires. Today, there is only a very small portion of the island that is in Abnormally Dry conditions and none of the island is considered to be affected by drought.

With every vacation I've gone on I've continued to learn more and more about how to approach it. I didn't know Hawaii could get THAT rainy if you go during their rainy season lol (rare or not if you book during a time like that it's the risk you take)

I was super happy to see some whales though so it was a trade-off for sure.

We booked the trip on a whim and basically decided January based on cost. Since booking I did enough research to know I probably didn't pick the right month to go based off what we wanted from the trip, e.g. just chilling on the beach hitting up bars for happy hour.

Moral of the story, if you're planning a multi-thousand dollar vacation DO YOUR RESEARCH. Crazy idea I know, we still had a great time tho but I was salty quite often. On one of my last days it was gorgeous for sunset, saw a whale breach from the beach, munched on a meatball sandwich and took 1000 pictures of that gorgeous sunset. Felt like Maui threw us a bone for our last days there.

I have to see the other islands. Been there twice because I enjoyed the first time so much. A fresh avo on a secluded beach in Hańa is one of my best memories from there.

2

enjoytheshow t1_j8x8j8p wrote

I also need to get to the other islands but I love Maui so much. I’ve been three times now. Saving up for next year to extend the vacation by a few days so we can do our days like we love on Maui but then go to Kauai as well.

A plane tour of Kauai during the golden hour is one of the most breathtaking things I’ve ever seen. The Napali coast is certainly something to see in person

Have you also made a landscape version from this angle? My eyes want to see more rocks in the water, on the right side of the frame

Can you snorkel kapalua area in January? Never been to hawaii and planning a maui trip for next winter, very grateful/excited

2

crankyape1534 OP t1_j8zpw0q wrote

You can snorkel it any time of the year assuming that the weather is ok. Winter does tend to have some west and northern swells that are larger but I’ve found perfect days almost any time of the year depending.

How much does it cost to get a camera that takes pics like this? 🤔

1

crankyape1534 OP t1_j8wr931 wrote

Not much. Just need one that allows for manual exposure settings etc. can get an entry level for $500

is this the beach down from Kapalua Bay Villas? it's the left area where you can climb up and see all the tide pools?

1

crankyape1534 OP t1_j8wxco4 wrote

There are tide pools. The access to this area is by a small pathway between residential areas. It is south of kapalua

ok yea.. I think I have pictures of this same spot from June of last year

Porrick t1_j8x1d2g wrote

Certainly better than an East Maui sunset...

1

crankyape1534 OP t1_j8x26jm wrote

In my opinion yes. From east Maui you just see the sun set over the island of Maui. West Maui you get an ocean sunset with the view of lanai and Molokai. Sunset is varied depending on your position on the island.

2

Porrick t1_j8x2jjw wrote

Lol yeah of course! Everywhere on the planet, sunsets are going to be better on West coasts than East coasts - and the reverse will be true of sunrises!

Until the Earth starts rotating the other way, that is.

Just poking some gentle fun, don't mind me!
