Remember this. You'll bring your future air jalopey home and it'll get hacked /broken into and stolen. Wait like 3 years after and atleast get an upgraded model.

This lacks wheels, so by definition it shouldn't be considered a "motorbike" or a "bike" by itself. It's a hoverbike.

The article states that it "runs on electricity", which feels a little misleading because it is powered by both batteries and an internal combustion engine.

Anyway, it's an interesting product, but with as loud as these very likely are I dread the idea of them screaming through residential areas.

They just came out with some new propeller designs that are pretty quiet… for water. Fluid engineering says this should, at some point, be applicable to above-water propeller tech.

You’re mixing things up. There are commercial toroidal propellers for boats, they have been in production for years, but cost $5000 each.

MIT recently developed toroidal propellers that they demonstrated with a quad rotor drone. No reason they couldn’t be scaled up to fit this. But the question is will they, not can they.

I don’t like the number of vehicles we have on the roads now; the thought of our airspace filled with hover bikes and flying cars (or whatever term we might apply to personal flying vehicle) really turns my stomach. Imagine hardly being able to look up and just see the sky in many areas? Gross.

And yeah, the noise, too.

Just what we need. People who can't be bothered to pay attention when they're driving cars, especially if they happen to have an important tweet to send out, to be flying. What could possibly go wrong?

If you've ever wondered why this design isn't used on helicopters, you're thinking down the right track (safety). I wanted my c&c orca, damnit.

I cannot imagine the legal waiver required to let someone operate one of these things, but it's not something I'd be signing.

Those are never going outside of very specific places. We certainly can't have those things flying all around the cities. What a huge waste of time and money.

Nope. Elroy makes a time machine and that's where the Jetson/Flintstone corssover comes in. In the Birdman episode "Back to the Present" they reveal that the ice caps melted and flooded Earth.

Thanks, I thought that the Flintstones took place in a future. Where technology had been lost and their caveman implementations of existing technology was based on recreating what had been lost.

This is a way for joint venture capitalists to give money to each other, kind of like the Segway, which ultimately only cops wanted.

2

kirpid t1_jbkl7gs wrote

This is a hell of a lot cooler than a Segway. Nobody ever got laid riding one of those.

This seems like the logical next step towards a flying car. But there’s too many technical and safety issues to overcome, for this thing to ever be profitable.

It's kinda like a helicopter that they made worse in every single way.

An R22 is like half the price, goes something like 10x the distance, goes like 2-3x the speed, and sits two people inside a cockpit.

I think these manufacturers need to accept that flying car/bike is a dumb idea. Cars & bikes are designed that way because it's an efficient form for ground transit. Vehicles in the sky should be designed for flight, not to look like a car.

cote112 t1_jbjmkju wrote

We've had flying cars since the early 90's. The problems are

  1. they're not more gas efficient than driving on the ground.

  2. There aren't well established rules for flying cars.

  3. Crashes are more dangerous.
