I'm sure it'll matter as much as the 2014 paris agreement. The U.N. cannot compel any country to act accordingly for the change required.

We need radical and sweeping societal transformation to get this done and that's just not happening quick enough. Most peoples citizens values cheap goods and services more than anything else they care about. Good luck getting reelected if you don't prioritize that kind of economy.

The summit in Egypt could be the world’s best hope of progress on the climate issue

The latest UN climate summit - COP27 - is reckoned to be the world's best hope of progress on the climate issue.

Progress is certainly needed.

The global effort to cut emissions is "woefully inadequate" and means the world is on track for "catastrophe", the UN warned last week.

But the meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh is shaping up to be a prickly and confrontational affair.

There will be no progress unless we engage and persuade the naysayers to change their views in a positive way. Simply shouting them down will accomplish nothing. Sadly I see little sign of progress a long time.

Speculating about the future - this is a very tough problem to solve! We live in a competitive world, and if a nation can gain advantage over its rivals by polluting then they are very likely to do so. By leading on climate change, the west risks losing its economic power versus nations that pollute, and hence its ability to influence further change.
