VRChat is already sorta mainstream.
It won't get anymore mainstream than that until VR as a whole is more popular.
Because Meta is just killing it with the meta verse, aren’t they? /s
When the company has to mandate their employees spend time in it - I don't think it will be the first anything.

On top of that, I really think comfort is the other massive hurdle. I know there are people able to wear VR goggles for hours on end, but those are all enthusiasts, willing to make the modifications to make that possible. You take a regular out of the box VR headset and give it to a layperson, I doubt most of them would be willing to wear it for an hour.
IMO, it’s going to take finding a way to do it without a bulky headset. Not sure if that will ever happen.
Yeah, the hardware kills the experience right now. It’s not something like a phone everyone can have with them easily to experience the content.

There's a chance it's an extremely simple social app -- perhaps the VR version of Facetime. Simply being able to feel like you're in a room with someone you care about.
