I guess I can see why a science magazine would describe something like magic. It makes it sound more appealing to people who don't understand science. But it's also not true.

It’s still very fascinating though even if it is saddled with an unfortunate headline.
The most immediate application I can think of for this is a very precise waste heat management system that would help keep qubits coherent.

If they were really pulling it out of nothing they wouldn't have to also inject it elsewhere. The quantum foam isn't nothing.

However, Masahiro Hotta, a theoretical scientist at Japan's Tohoku University, suggested 15 years ago that perhaps the void could be persuaded to give up something.

Something like this was tried/done before but the funding was cut by J.P. Morgan because he could not make enough money from it, stuff like this is what actually could save humanity, lets hope the J.P. Morgans of this time will not be there again to stop it.

This isn't free energy, it requires putting energy into the system in total. It's just that the energy has been put in and extracted from the quantum fluctuations.

Headline is misleading.
What’s being demonstrated here is quantum teleportation of energy between two entangled atoms.
