That would be my coworkers and almost everyone I know in the service industry in my town. This is common at least in my area.

That's a lot of assumptions. I have a degree, although it is an AS. Many of my coworkers have degrees, some with higher degrees, in STEM and the medical field. I live in Colorado, the US. My town is extremely expensive and many of us haven't had the opportunity to leave it.

Guess I'm helped by what my degree is in (it's a degree where there is a good amount of available jobs, even during an economic crisis)

That's good for you. When I looked for jobs in my field (bioinformatics and genetics) in my area since I have 6 years of lab experience, even with my BS I would have been making half the pay I get now unfortunately.
