Did they have have hollow tubes that contains small pieces of metal filled with magic quick expanding/heating powder? If they use their tentacles on the moving metal bits it can remove magic from skeletons.

Also by "said", do you mean they used their cave of sharp bones to generate magic air waves that somehow transmit data?
