It's better to walk into incoming traffic than it is to walk safely on a sidewalk.

In that case they'd be walking in the right direction, which does not conflict with OP's quote.

Reddit tends to have a very sour view towards anyone who isn't an absolute conformist, or at least certain Subreddits.

Just make sure to check why others are walking that way.

Yeah often herd mentality can be harmful, but sometimes people band together for a good reason.

But don't go against the crowd just because it makes you feel special. Check the facts to make sure you aren't actually just being a dumbass.

Lol the comments here are full of the most negative perspectives, especially for a "get motivated" sub.

Just take the quote at face value and take the positive, why does everyone have to try to find flaw in the logic when you all know damn well what it feels like to feel pressured into a wrong decision because of herd mentality? FFS what's been going on with Reddit? It's so full of toxicity System of a Down should write a song about it

1

ddlbb t1_j5mqya9 wrote

I mean … wouldn’t that always be the case ? How is this motivational

1

TBTabby t1_j5noaxv wrote

Sadly, most people who espouse this are mindless contrarians, assuming that everything the majority does is wrong regardless of evidence. That mentality is what leads to people chugging horse paste instead of getting the COVID vaccine, and many preventable deaths. Sometimes the majority does it that way because it's the best way. That doesn't mean you should be a conformist, of course. But you should think before you go off the beaten path.

It's better to walk on the closed race track than be with the other bystanders in safety.

1

scienceguy8 t1_j5oh515 wrote

Well, that depends. Are you someone who has recognized injustice in a system that’s putting innocent people down and are walking against the grain to call attention to that? Then walk on, you brave soul.

Are you a scientist who has done peer-reviewed and proven science that calls into question what was known before? Then keep on teaching that new science of yours.

Are you a person born into social group A who feels like they’d be a lot more comfortable in group B, even if group A would then antagonize you? Go for it. You’ll find new friends and family in group B.

Are you someone with no expertise in a field preaching that the experts in that field are wrong, with no substantial research or analysis by yourself to back up your claims? Then you need to take a hard look at what direction you’re going in and where it might lead before you continue.

Frelock_ t1_j5lhqli wrote

See, I used to really be into this mindset as a kid, but I missed out on so much because I believed if everyone was doing it, I shouldn't be. I didn't get into Power Rangers, Pokemon, Harry Potter, and was generally friendless because I couldn't relate to people.

So while yes, just because everyone is doing it doesn't make it right, it doesn't make it wrong if everyone is doing it either. Feel free to follow the crowd if it's what you enjoy!
