I have this wicked habit of waking up, doing the tasks on my alarm (app: I can't wake up), and then falling back asleep. Even with the "wake test", I manage to subconsciously disable it and go right back to the dream world.

What do you folks use to wake up and what do you do to avoid this habit I've created?

I should note that I do have my phone near me on my nightstand and that the app does support tasks that involve getting up. I'm wondering if that's the go-to trick or if there's more I can do to prevent missing more morning classes (better app, something to get your systems fired up, etc).

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Thanks for all the replies, folks! I appreciate the input and I believe I have the tools to be a productive member of society

Mel Robbins introduced me to the 5-second rule. You have 5 seconds to get up before your brain decides to make every excuse for you NOT to do it. It really changed my ability to get up in the mornings.

Leave your phone on the other side of the room so you need to get up to turn it off.

Sleep with your curtains open so the light comes in and wakes you up

I use the Alarmy app. Very loud alarm with different things you have to do in order to shut it off. I do complex math problems, but walking around is an option

I can't even look at a screen on low brightness for an hour. Luckily my alarm is my kids waking up naturally then I get up and hang out with them for a while before work.

I slept through the night like a bebe the other night and told everyone who would listen the next day. Did my bladder almost burst? Yes, but it was the most glorious sleep in the past 6 years.

I second this but with Apple Watch for me. It’s best for not waking up a partner. I’ll set several alarms on my watch

I third this. Deep sleeper. Vibration on wrist has saved my bacon.

I just set like 37 alarms every ten mins for an hour before I have to be up. With the snooze button my alarm goes off more and more frequently the closer to the time I have to be up.

Basically, annoy yourself into waking up.

I also do this and realized now I’ll never be able to live with a long term partner. RIP

I used to have an app that made me do a math problem to shut off the alarm. Now I just set 8 of them so if I fall back asleep another one is right around the corner. This has trained me to just get up because there's no hope of peace after the first one.

Get a screaming meanie alarm clock. Set it on high. Place it in a location where you have to get up to turn it off. Problem. Solved.

My clock/alarm has been kept across the room so that I must get up and cross the room to turn it off since college. It was/is the only way I can make sure it wakes me up.

I used to use wakeupdialer and set the phone away from me. Have to put their number in your phone if you have the “silence unknown calls” feature on. It helped some.

My first proper flagship smartphone was the Mi 4. All Xiaomi's phones have this alarm tone by default, it's called Good Morning. It's so fucking irritating that after using Mi 4 for 2-3 months, I no longer had to set multiple alarms. One was enough.

That tune has been my alarm tone on every single phone afterwards. I copied the file to Google Drive and change default of every new phone.

The iPhone alarm sound has me so traumatized that even when I am awake my heart starts beating real fast when it goes off on someone else’s phone. Something about that sound always gets me up from bed.

My phone is plugged across the room! My alarm goes off, I get up, step on my lamps floor switch(no hands-easy), and walk straight to my coffee pot(which I have a timer set to brew 10 minutes before my alarm goes off). Once I put this in place I have never slept in since!

I also give myself time to sit and wake up while drinking coffee. I’ll save podcast episodes that I’ve been wanting to listen to for the morning, so it’ll motivate me to stay up and listen! It’s a nice ritual that I’ve grown to look forward to.

Get a Sunlight Alarm clock on Amazon (it's around $40). It peacefully wakes you up with the gradual light that slowly build up. Overall I've found it easier to wake up in the morning.

I use Nuj Alarm Clock.

It's an app I built that charges money (goes to charity - Khan Academy) if you don't scan a barcode/QR code within a few mins of your alarm.

Also, unlike other alarm apps, you can't just turn off the phone. Alarms "lock" 1 hour before going off. When locked, they can't be changed. Alarms are stored in the cloud so if you turn off your phone after your alarm locks, you still get charged.

e.g. I have to scan my toothpaste within 5 minutes of my 7am alarm or pay $10. If I turn off my phone after 6am, I'll still get charged $10!

Have something you enjoy doing in the morning that not waking up means you can't do. For me, it's sitting and drinking my coffee in silence. I have 30mins to do this in the morning and always wake up for it bc its my favorite time

I use an app where I have to scan a barcode to turn the alarm off and the barcode is in the bathroom. I also use a lamp that has a gradual light that comes on which is supposed to help you wakeup and is separate from the sound alarm.

Figure out how much sleep time you actually need, figure out when you need to wake up, and do the math to arrive at the time you need to go to bed.

Then, go to bed at that time.

Light makes a big difference for me. I have one of those Phillips alarm clocks that slowly get brighter until the alarm goes off and then I have several lamps on smart home plugs that turn on with the alarm. Makes a huge difference in the winter especially.
