Hi r/Hartford

This is my first time posting on this subreddit, but I noticed a couple times people asking that they are moving to Hartford and are looking for a place to stay for something relatively cheap. Please, do NOT consider going to Capitol View Apartments.

Due to the previous owners being bought out, the new management have either removed most amenities and or stopped completely supporting them, such as 24/7 maintenance and security, cleaning of apartment halls, and super slow maintenance response times.

Below is a list I've compiled that I had issues with, while I was living there for 6 months.

  • Unit has issues with roaches & mice and is a high health concern. (Mice can be heard at night and usually run around apartment if food is left out.)
  • A mouse was found dead in my apartment and took too long to remove, and the hole has not been repaired, with maintenance entering the unit and investigating.
  • The issue of the bathroom ceiling leaking was handled poorly and took 1.5 months to repair. (Resident above me when taking bath's, a pipe starts leaking and fast dripping down water onto my bathroom.)
  • Package room is closed to tenants and must be picked up on a schedule of 9 AM – 5 PM. (Due to packages being stolen)
  • The apartment has issues with constant fire alarms occurring. (Frequent, and are not turned off until fire department arrives at the building.)
  • Packages have been stolen previously, even with them being picked up as soon as possible. (They have a package room and a mail room, packages are delivered in mail room where anyone can take them.)
  • Elevators are either constantly broken or not working.
  • Appliances are wobbly and stove does not light without the use of a lighter.
  • Garbage chute is incredibly dirty, and trash is often piled up near the door.

If you are interested in more information, feel free to reach out to me!

Lol hi I lived here for 2 years and just moved back.

It is a good deal, has parking, but yes it is a dump. I have never had pest issues though due to my behemoth whale cats. It used to smell really bad in the common areas but now it’s a little better, so that’s a perk. I got my packages delivered to the mail room today with the logic if anyone steals it I’ll get my money from Amazon, but you are right, I wouldn’t get anything valuable from family shipped here. Of course garbage chutes are dirty lol. Also the back parking lot turns into an ice skating rink due to the lack of salt and plowing combined with the shape of the building blocking the sun.

I have laid out roach bait and traps for my time here before and now and have only stumbled upon a couple, which pails in comparison to some of the places I’ve lived in other parts of this country. I do keep a tidy home though and would never leave food out obviously?

The fire alarms do go off all the time because folks cook Smokey cuisine and keep their doors open to waft it into the halls and they smoke inside cause folks are simply inconsiderate. This has a lot to do with the smell I previously complained about which was worse a few years back.

You get what you can afford sadly lol.

Edit: all in all this apartment isn’t for the faint of heart, but it is a convenient location, has flexible leases, and is more affordable than the fancy downtown ones.

When I toured last summer they wanted 1350 for a decent sized studio that’s not much cheaper than the newer stuff downtown

Damn I got a deluxe 1 bed for less than that. Figure it’s pretty decent deal for all utilities included nowadays.

I lived in the same style unit though in 2017-2018 for 999!

Same goes for anything managed by PMC Property Group. They're slumlords to the max. Especially avoid 915 Main St.

The barbershop definitely gets lit at night tho! lol. That’s usually where no matter what I do, people get close to hitting me while I ride my bike. Something about the intersection makes people want to hop the curb.

This really sucks. Hartford really needs to have more money for housing enforcement. It is severely understaffed.

One friendly tip: It's the landlord's responsibility to control mice, but you might be able to get rid of them for a while by putting out a bunch of traps. You can get a dozen on Amazon for a few dollars and they might rid the area of mice for a few weeks/months. Mice can be bad in a lot of suburban homes , in rich neighborhoods, too but it might be one thing that you can control if it's not a huge infestation.

The rent is dirt cheap for a reason, but it’s better than sleeping on the street and sadly the only option for many people

The beginning and end - you get what you pay for.

" usually run around apartment if food is left out" Tenant fault. Don't be a pig. " took too long to remove" Pick it up and put it in the trash. Tenant problem. " handled poorly and took 1.5 months to repair" Could be a valid complaint, but without knowing how severe, what the fix required was, and nowadays particularly whether there were supply chain holdups, hard to tell. "Due to packages being stolen" Working as intended, unless you want your things stolen. Are you paying extra for them to stay open? Didn't think so. "not turned off until fire department arrives at the building" Working as intended. Apartments are so dense chances can not be taken. "Packages have been stolen previously" Your fourth issue took care of this, but is not enough apparently. "Elevators are either constantly broken" If you are disabled call the state. If not, walk. " stove does not light without the use of a lighter." If the pilot is off, this is normal. Do they pay the gas bill? Maybe they shut them off? "trash is often piled up near the door" How are pigs for neighbors a management problem?

It's a crappy place to live, but you get what you pay for
