Why is there a tax on owning a Motor Vehicle in Hartford, Connecticut? I am not making any additional money on my vehicle.

Is there a place in CT that doesn't tax owning a vehicle? It was my understanding it helps pay for road maintenance, etc - I have had to pay it in 2 cities in CT so far.

Yup they get more expensive every year. Get out of this liberal shithole as fast as you can

I mean the alternative is what, having homeowners pay it? Road maintenance needs to be done and it needs funding to do it - what do you suggest?

Ct is one of the only state that has that tax. The state needs to do better with managing its money and bringing people and business back. Taxing more will make them leave. Look at California

CT also doesn't have tolls, correct?

IDK but I constantly see people talking about moving to CT because of it's policies, despite the higher tax, so I think we might have to agree to disagree on that.

Every municipality in CT collects motor vehicle taxes.

Piping up from Virginia: we have it, too, and it’s just as popular.

It's a property tax, not an income tax.

I've never had to pay personal property tax in the states I've lived previously, but it's not uncommon -I think like 23 states don't have it?

BUT many have car tabs or additional registration fees instead which can range the gamut.

Everyone (with a car) in CT pays personal property car tax. The amount you pay depends on your town's mill rate (some have a different mill rate for vehicles) & the value of your car.

I moved to CT from a state where we had increased registration fees and no property tax on cars. The combination of my taxes and registration fees is way more here than it was in my prior state. And I drive a 2013 sedan. I’m not driving anything new and fancy where I’d owe thousands in car tax.

Yeah I'm personally not a fan. It's less than the last state I lived car tabs, but wayyy more than the one before that where I paid like $75 bucks. Uff da.

It's a state tax on your personal property, not technically a "car" tax. The rate you pay (mill rate) depends on the town you live in, and factors in the rough value of the vehicle(s) registered in your name.

They collect tax so they can keep our roads in tip top shape.

Okay! Then why is there a State tax on the income? Those funds can be used to keep infrastructure in good shape too.

I feel like they don't have tolls, and if they do- it's not a state where tourism is also considered as a source of income. People usually like to stay in the summers here.

Yet the roads in Hartford are still shitty. They’re basically punishing you for having a car.
