I currently live outside of Boston and work in an urban school district in special education administration. My husband works 100% from home. When looking for more affordable places to live with similar school districts and similar pay in NE we landed on Hartford. Our children are in college so where we live is not important. We are a multiethnic family and want to live in a community that reflects diversity. Having access to ethnic markets and restaurants is important to us. Thoughts? What are the schools like? I want to work in a diverse setting language, culture and socioeconomic.

Hartford needs teachers like you! I encourage you to reach out to the school system and an organization called CREC.

CREC would be a good place to check for openings as they operate charter schools in several different towns. You might find a position that will have similar diversity to say Hartford schools without actually having to travel into and out of Hartford every day - traffic can get horrendous at times.

To clarify, CREC isn’t a charter school. It is a regional magnet school. There are lots of little towns in the “Capitol Region” and those little districts can opt into the CREC and pull from CREC’s resources, (therapists, school psychiatrist, IEP requirements, etc.) At the same time, students may opt into that magnet system and be bussed not a diverse setting.

I recently moved from Florida and am a proud public school advocate. I was amazed at how clever the setup is here!

As a parent of a 12 year student in the CREC system, I can say, at least in the 3 schools my daughter has attended, it was definitely more diverse than if she had attended school in the town we lived in.

I teach in Hartford itself. If you don't mind the issues that come with teaching in an urban environment the Hartford Public Schools will hire you. The district is short many teachers and is offering signing bonuses to anyone willing to step up.

My husband and I both teach English and are planning to apply in the spring. Are there vacancies for all subjects, or just high needs subjects?

In Hartford itself there are vacancies across the board. In suburban districts it is very competitive.

I work in a similar district so the challenges that come with it are just part of the gig for me. We are going on a visit soon. I’ve passed through Hartford but never took a closer look. I’m a special education administrator which looks like is also in demand.

Hartford and New Britain in particular are diverse! I can't speak to the schools beyond having worked with some NB high school students for one year, but they were great kids and a really diverse group.

Yes I second looking into CREC. I live in Tolland and for the most part it's a very opening and welcoming environment. School system and superintendent here are great!

If you are not looking for a urban place to live then Windsor and Bloomfield are racially diverse suburbs. West Hartford/New Britain l/Farmington converge near a mall/strip that has some of the most diverse food options in Hartford county west of the river. East Hartford/Manchester are also quite diverse and not as city as Hartford on the other side of the river. If you are looking for an urban experience really Hartford is the only option but due to redlining, interstates and white flight it is a bit segregated with blacks in the north and Hispanics in the south so it is "diverse" as not white but not necessarily diverse as multi-racial.

Bloomfield is just north of Hartford and a really nice town. BOE is easy to work with. Look us up

Hartford is great. Consider living in the city itself. You might also look at the New Haven-Stamford area, which is similar but more diverse. It gets more expensive as you get closer to NYC but the area around New Haven isn't hugely more costly than the Hartford area. Some of the suburbs throughout CT have a reputation for white supremacy but others are more diverse, and of course you should definitely consider the cities themselves, especially New Haven, if you like Boston.

Manchester is pretty diverse. And there's a lot of diversity in the area.
