I lived in Asylum Hill 2004 - 2013 when I moved to the West End where I still am. What keeps me here is that I have no children, nice house, quiet neighborhood, sidewalks for dog walking, and cool restaurants in walking distance.

If you had kids you would leave?

I don't think so. The Hartford public School system has a great reputation and there is also CREC as an option for Hartford residents. The only complaint I've really heard is that the lottery system is confusing.

I live downtown and can think of a dozen neighbors (both renters and condo owners) who moved during or just after the pandemic. Most of them had no children, but some did. Their reasons for moving were mostly for job or relationship, or their job changed to 100% permanent remote work and they moved to more of a vacation area. The ones in the first category are now in Boston, DC, Portland ME, New Orleans, and LA. The ones in the second category are in places like Vermont, Ogunquit, NorthHampton, Cape Cod, Old Saybrook.

Moved my mother out of Hartford. She couldn't live on her own any longer. CT is getting older.

I live in the Frog Hallow and Asylum Hill area. Between the conditions of the city and all of the addicts, it's not surprising that people are leaving. I love Hartford, but it's kind of a dump outside of the downtown XL Center area, and even downtown has issues.
