I live two blocks from the theater and the area is safe day and night. You will see many people walking up and down Capitol Avenue prior to the performance having come from two nearby. restaurants, Peppercorns and Republic. As others have said the state parking lots on Capitol Avenue across the street from The Bushnell are perfectly safe and decently lit. Just don’t leave anything visible in your car, i.e., don’t create a crime of opportunity by leaving a bag or some thing in your backseat just invites trouble. This is true for parking in any city at any time, anywhere.

Thanks everyone!! I'll park near the theater. I was also worried about my car getting broken into or stolen, but based on what you are all saying that shouldn't be a worry!

Bushnell Park is nice and safe during the day. Riverside Park can also be nice if weather is cooperative (Hartford or East Hartford side). For the event, I'll second that parking in the lots near Bushnell theater is the way to go. Tons of people, no issues

The lots near the theater are safe, and you'll be around a lot of other people going in/out of the theater. You wont have any problems in that sense. Just don't forget to bring $1 for the guy playing trumpet 🎺

If you are not looking for a urban place to live then Windsor and Bloomfield are racially diverse suburbs. West Hartford/New Britain l/Farmington converge near a mall/strip that has some of the most diverse food options in Hartford county west of the river. East Hartford/Manchester are also quite diverse and not as city as Hartford on the other side of the river. If you are looking for an urban experience really Hartford is the only option but due to redlining, interstates and white flight it is a bit segregated with blacks in the north and Hispanics in the south so it is "diverse" as not white but not necessarily diverse as multi-racial.

Ah sorry, I edited my post to clarify. I meant taking an Uber to the train station to take a train home (not parking there). But thank you I feel better knowing the parking lots by the theater are well lit! And thanks for the recommendations!

There are large parking lots behind Bushnell that are well lit and will be full of people and cars before and after the performance. It’s just a quick walk up Capitol Avenue to the theater. Don’t park next to the train station. It’s definitely not safe to walk around Hartford at night, but I’m not entirely sure it’s a good idea to walk around during the day either, unless you know Hartford well. If you want something to do during the day, then go visit the Mark Twain House on Farmington Avenue, the Wadsworth Atheneum on Main Street, the public library two doors down, the Old State House/museum of oddities by Main/Central Row, or any other attractions you can drive to and park easily.

To clarify, CREC isn’t a charter school. It is a regional magnet school. There are lots of little towns in the “Capitol Region” and those little districts can opt into the CREC and pull from CREC’s resources, (therapists, school psychiatrist, IEP requirements, etc.) At the same time, students may opt into that magnet system and be bussed not a diverse setting.

I recently moved from Florida and am a proud public school advocate. I was amazed at how clever the setup is here!

Hartford and New Britain in particular are diverse! I can't speak to the schools beyond having worked with some NB high school students for one year, but they were great kids and a really diverse group.

I teach in Hartford itself. If you don't mind the issues that come with teaching in an urban environment the Hartford Public Schools will hire you. The district is short many teachers and is offering signing bonuses to anyone willing to step up.

CREC would be a good place to check for openings as they operate charter schools in several different towns. You might find a position that will have similar diversity to say Hartford schools without actually having to travel into and out of Hartford every day - traffic can get horrendous at times.

You don’t mention if you are coming for a full-time job at the medical center or if you are coming for your medical residency. If the latter, there are a bunch of medical residents who live in my condo building in downtown Hartford who are in their UConn medical residency, but they split their time between three hospitals: UConn Dempsey Hospital, Hospital of Central CT (New Britain ), and Hartford Hospital (downtown Hartford). They rent their condos from other former medical residents who wanted to be downtown because they could walk to Hartford Hospital and catch transit from downtown to the other two hospitals about 50% of the time (depending on shift vs. bus schedule). Not sure if this is your situation, but just thought I’d put that info out there.

I noticed no one mentioned how hff is split up ethnically. So I'll break it down as best as I can.

Ethnically hfd is usually divided into neighborhoods of largely Hispanics and other smaller pockets of non American ethnicities in the South End? Iirc Bosnians used to populate the tail end of the south end near the edge bordering Wethersfield Ave. I heard Ukrainians are moving in now due to the war not sure how true it is though. ADOS in the North End near Barbour St. side. West Indians residents and businesses populate all along Albany Ave(where I live) and Blue Hills Neighborhood. With some ADOS and Hispanic population sprinkled. The West End of hfd is pretty mixed with everyone. Downtown is undergoing a resurgence with condos and moving in higher earners who work downtown, college students from the local business and med school.

I'm not going to get into the politics of why it's segregated. Just wanted to let you know how it is divided JiC you were curious
