I don't think it was staged, but whoever broadcasts it every year will probably benefit. People love drama, and I have no doubt that more people will tune in this year with the hopes of catching more drama.

The academy benefits from it.
It wasn't long before that I saw something that said that the ratings have been falling. So to me it made sense to do something crazy to drum-up some more interest.
