A gym teacher told me he was the smartest teacher at his school. He told me that he gets paid the same as the other teachers but he just watches people play volleyball all day.

Not sure how it works in your country but in mine (Japan), PE teacher literally ARE the smartest because they have to pass a written test to get their liscence. Problem is, the "passing grade" is whatever the number of teachers they need that year. They take the top grades, so in practice scoring a 99% could be a failing grade.

Since people wanna become PE teachers the most it is the most difficult to get a passing grade. Conversely, math teachers are the "dumbest"* since fewer people take the test.
