I don't answer my phone at all unless I have the number saved, and I don't call back unless they leave a voice-mail with verifiable info.

All the scam texts I get go into a scam folder now so I've answered a few of them.

Basically it goes like this:

> Hi RandomName > > Whats up? > > Nothing, this is RandomName? > > Nah, you misdialed > > Oh sorry, I got the wrong number by mistake. > > It's okay > > Feels like you are a good person. > You want to be friends?

I usually text back something embarrassing or homicidal. Like "Stop screwing around Boris, did you get that woodchipper? This guy isn't going to take himself apart". Or "hey baby, I had a great time last night. The way you moved in that Donald Duck costume just got me going. And that was the most amazing rub down with a&w root beer I've ever had". Usually I escalate from there and just make it weirder.

Covid brought 2 things to the forefront for me. I got a lot more scammer calls and I had a lot of spare time to mess with them. Now it's a hobby. My wife is the legend though, she kept them on for an hour.

Put your number on a list to sell to scammers/telemarketers. To be honest it doesn't even matter. They'll just call the number and you'll either pickup confirming your number is active, decline the call confirming the number is active, or it will go to voicemail confirming the number is active.

I learned this from a scammer and serial debt fraudster over the pandemic: Change your voicemail to remove your name. So many people, myself included leave/left their names in the voicemail. People can look you up via your name and see it's connected to such number via a simple internet search. This will:

#1. Help anyone know your number is active and you're the one responsible for it. #2. Help debt collectors know it's your number and to continue to harass you for money #3. Gives cops the ability to gather sensitive information about you more easily

The best thing to do is either set up a robotic voice for your number. Or to speak your number. The latter will enable people who know you to know they got the right number, but prevents outsiders from knowing who you are.
